NHL 2013 regular season thread!

I've heard J. Bernier's name, from LA, thrown around a bit. Seems like he's ready to be a starting GK. I won't be surprised to see him go to a 7-8-9 place team.

Locally, it seems like everyone in Buffalo is ready to trade anyone/everyone on the Sabres, even Miller and/or Vanek. Except for, possibly, the Sabres. At this point, the team is in a bit of a mess, BUT, they're close to making the playoffs. So... Nothing will really surprise me.

When they met earlier this year, it was the first time a fired coach had coached against the guy who replaced him after being fired. Thought that was a shocking statistic, mainly because it was only the first time that's happened.

Yeah, that is strange it's never happened before with the way NHL teams recycle coaches.

3-0 San Jose in the first already. Not much of a game so far. I'm not going to stay up all night for this unless Anaheim shows up.

Totally agree about Schenn hitting Simmonds with the puck. That was just one of those unfortunate plays that sometimes happen.

I WAS surprised that Simmonds wasn't wearing a visor after they sewed him up. And then he promptly gets sliced open again on a high stick by Boyle. Should have been at least 4 minutes, but apparently none of the officials saw it.

...and MTL wins it.

Game of the year! It's a tie between that and a St-Louis game in which they came back with 4 unanswered goals in the third to win it!

Anyway, there were 4 goals that were all lucky bounces, total. A Bruins one was from Marchand after he shoots wide when standing not 3 feet away from the net. The puck hits the board and does a 45 degree bounce onto the other side. Price was still hugging the left post and Marchand shoots it softly as it goes perpendicularly 6-8" from the red line and Price kicks it in with his left pad.

One for MTL was Pacioretty who shoots it onto Seidenberg's face during a rush. The puck then ends up on Gallagher's still who has a yawning cage after Rask is caught challenging the shot a bit too much.

A breakdown of the game is that it was initially 2-0 for the Habs. Then, they play their worst defensive period of the year by allowing 4 unanswered goals to give the lead to the Bruins, 4-2. With 8.2 secs left in the 3rd, the Habs tie it 5-5. In the shootout, all I saw were some really lame attempts from both teams, especially from Ryder and Bergeron who lost the handle and didn't even end up shooting it. In the end, Gallagher, a candidate for the Calder trophy puts it past Rask to give the Habs the win.

The stupidest thing I saw all game was the diminutive Armstrong in the Bruins' slot giving Chara a small tap with his stick like every player in the NHL does throughout the game. Chara overreacts by spearing Armstrong in the groin. When Armstrong skates towards him to express his anger, Chara elbows him in the face without warning. Chara gets called for the elbowing and goes ape on the ref. Meanwhile, coach Julien is yelling "What a f-ing joke!" to the ref. Gee guys... what did you think was going to happen? Apart from that, it was a clean game. Just hard hockey. Felt like a Playoff game, same as when I watched the Pens against the Flyers very recently.

And of course, the Bruins start up again with the embellishment crap. Will this be the go-to crybaby/whining move every single time the Habs get a win against them? Talk about being sore losers. My 6yo nephew loses with more dignity than that. Yikes.

Nope. Headed to Pittsburg in exchange for left wingers Ben Hanowski (drafted late in the 3rd round) and Kenneth Agostino (late in the 5th), as well as a 2013 1st-round draft pick.

The Flames better hope that 1st-round pick will pan out because Agostino will probably not even play in the NHL and Hanowski only has a slim chance of playing on the 2nd line and will probably be a 3rd-liner 2-way player at best.

...and that 1st-rounder will be a late one due to the Pens ranking high on the standings. Not so great.

Kinda funny, I saw it confirmed on both TSN.ca, NHL.com, and even local Calgary news that Iggy was gone to Boston...Aaron Ward apparently is a good enough source for everyone to call it truth.

And now let the accusations of trade-rape ensue...

All rides on that 1st-rounder. If he becomes somebody special, it'll be rated as a good trade for the Flames.

It'd have to be a diamond in the rough, somebody that every other GM missed until the 25th position or so which I'm guessing this guy will be.

I thought that was interesting about picking up two captains. It feels to me like Shero is after some leadership as much as he is after someone to fill a stat sheet. It may help Crosby indirectly by not having to be that guy, even though he has the C on his jersey.

Strat's description of the game is a good one. Feels odd to agree with 95% of what he wrote. ;)It was an exciting game with a less than optimum outcome for the B's, but at least they scored some goals.

We'll disagree about whether Armstrong was skating toward Chara to express a bit of verbal displeasure or whether he was thinking a stick in the face - so I had no issue with Chara's reaction - you don't tug on Superman's cape. Just because Chara is big it doesn't mean he has to let little guys get in his face. Don't have a problem with the penalty either, glad that the guys killed it off.

No sure where your issue on embellishment comes from - Julien was asked post-game and didn't comment. If it is from B's fans in your area or on other hockey boards, it might be worth letting it go a bit here. The Habs won - be happy, not mad. I watched most of the local post-game show and there was no mention of embellishment. The national announcers thought one of the Montreal guys sold a holding call, I didn't think that it was over the top. This year's Habs team seems to understand that it is good enough to win without the baloney that previous teams indulged in. Given the intensity of the game, the refs did a pretty good job overall.

Biggest disappointment of the night is Iginla going to Pittsburg. I think that is where he wanted to go and it didn't matter what the B's offered. Pittsburg has to be the favorite right now - so I can't blame him for going there. Reminds me a bit of when the Yanks and Sox where going after Texiera - it didn't matter what the Sox offered, the Yanks were going to offer more and he really wanted to be a Yankee.

Clearly, you've never seen Armstrong play. A rather talentless plug whose checks could barely hurt a 2-month old baby. He also plays cleanly. These guys play each other multiple times throughout the season and know each other well. Even if I know Chara's the biggest vagina in the NHL, I wasn't expecting a spear in the groin couple with an elbow to the face in retaliation for the common slap of a stick on a protected area. A disproportionate reaction, to say the least. He should've had 2 penalties ; one for spearing and one for elbowing. The funniest thing about Armstrong is how his name is an oxymoron to the type of player he is. LOL! What a bad acquisition for the Habs. At least, he doesn't cost much and isn't a defensive liability.

Marchand stated in a post-game interview which I saw that the team embellishes and insinuated that this was the reason they lost. Yes, Julien dropped the matter but didn't retract his stupid statements either. I can send you a link to the Marchand interview if you want to see it for yourself. :)

Sorry if you misinterpreted my comments for coming from somebody who was mad ; I wasn't in the least. I simply call things as I see them. For instance, had we had some conversations last season, I wouldn't have hesitated to find the Habs' management and players accountable for their poor play and decisions. This season however has been a 180-degree turn, hence why there isn't much for me to criticize. But the season ain't over yet, so stay tuned for when it happens. I'm a huge NHL hockey fan and enjoy watching whichever team play. I follow almost every team closely.

I will say that Price has yet to amaze me this season. He was rock-solid last year and I've found him to be constantly bad at stopping any straight shots one-on-one. Why? What changed? No idea. Personally, he'd better up his game because the Playoffs will be much harder for him otherwise.

True. Non-trade clauses sure throw curveballs to whomever wishes to deal players with one.

Having said that, imagine if the Penguins get eliminated in the first round! All of those picks (and Joe Morrow) will have been for naught. That'd be one hell of an upset. It'll be interesting to see which team will end up facing them. A Bruins/Penguins matchup would be the most interesting one (to me).

FWIW, the Habs lost 1-0 against the Pens a couple of days ago and they didn't have Prust, Bourque, or Diaz in their lineup. So it *is* possible to play well against them. I'll be keeping an eye out to see how many losses the Pens get before the season's over now that they're stacked.

The highlight for my family and I occurred during the pre-game skate. My son and I went to see them up close at their bench and we caught the eye of their equipment manager, Pierre Gervais. He saw us in our Habs gear (the underwhelmingly clear minority in the Consol Energy Center....lol) and he grabbed a stick and tossed it over the glass to us. Tomas Plekanec's T90 Sherwood with a handwritten number 14 on white hockey tape.

We were blown away and we're still buzzing about this. To top it off, Gionta threw a puck over the glass to us as well. We drove back home today and my son can't wait to tell all his friends at school tomorrow. My son is only 7 and is a total hockey nut. Plays well too.

I'm so happy that my son had this opportunity.
