NHL 2013 regular season thread!

Whens the draft again? Lol. I think the flyers should throw the rest of their games and get us a better pick.

When they totally blew (like they do now) and sat at the bottom of the league a few years back, they couldn't even buy the number one pick. Even the ping pong balls hated them. The number one pick went to Chicago and Philadelphia wound up with Van Riemsdyk.

Here's what Bruins' GM had to say about the Iginla trade ;

In a rare move, general manager Peter Chiarelli held a news conference on Thursday afternoon explaining the process of how the deal for the much-coveted Flames captain came together and fell apart.

"We made a firm offer two days ago and were told at Noon yesterday (Wednesday) that we'd won the Jarome Iginla sweepstakes so to speak," Chiarelli told reporters. "We believed that we had a deal."

The Bruins' offer for Iginla's services was believed to be defenceman Matt Bartkowski, forward Alexander Khokhlachev and a first-round pick conditional on Iginla re-signing with the Bruins. Chiarelli even went so far as to scratch both players from their Boston and Providence lineups in anticipation.

But as the day went on, Chiarelli and the Bruins did not hear back from the Flames as both teams prepared for their respective games against the Montreal Canadiens and Colorado Avalanche.

"We relied on the fact that we had a deal," said Chiarelli. "Now, these things happen all the time, more than you know, about deals going south for whatever reason. We believed we had a deal. We operated on the premise that we had a deal. When things were silent, in my experience, when things go silent, things are usually going screwy from your end. And it was."

The Bruins GM said he then received a call from the Flames at about 11:45pm et on Wednesday night saying that it was the "player's choice" and that Iginla was going to be dealt to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

"I think at the end of the day that's what it was," Chiarelli said. "We put a heck of an offer forward. Those players are good players."

Chiarelli added that despite losing out on Iginla last-minute, the team was still looking to make improvements ahead of next Wednesday's trade deadline. "There's players out there," he said. We're in on players. You get back on your horse, you go out there and you find some more players."

Chiarelli also said he was not upset with Flames GM Jay Feaster or the Calgary Flames. "This kind of stuff happens more than you know," he explained.

Chiarelli is taking a beating in the Boston media today, mostly from fans. It's not his fault. That's why players have no-trade clauses. They want some say. I get that. I got no problems with Chiarelli. But hey, of course I wouldn't. :D

Clearly, you've never seen Armstrong play. A rather talentless plug whose checks could barely hurt a 2-month old baby. He also plays cleanly. These guys play each other multiple times throughout the season and know each other well. Even if I know Chara's the biggest vagina in the NHL, I wasn't expecting a spear in the groin couple with an elbow to the face in retaliation for the common slap of a stick on a protected area. A disproportionate reaction, to say the least. He should've had 2 penalties ; one for spearing and one for elbowing. The funniest thing about Armstrong is how his name is an oxymoron to the type of player he is. LOL! What a bad acquisition for the Habs. At least, he doesn't cost much and isn't a defensive liability.

Marchand stated in a post-game interview which I saw that the team embellishes and insinuated that this was the reason they lost. Yes, Julien dropped the matter but didn't retract his stupid statements either. I can send you a link to the Marchand interview if you want to see it for yourself. :)

Sorry if you misinterpreted my comments for coming from somebody who was mad ; I wasn't in the least. I simply call things as I see them. For instance, had we had some conversations last season, I wouldn't have hesitated to find the Habs' management and players accountable for their poor play and decisions. This season however has been a 180-degree turn, hence why there isn't much for me to criticize. But the season ain't over yet, so stay tuned for when it happens. I'm a huge NHL hockey fan and enjoy watching whichever team play. I follow almost every team closely.

I will say that Price has yet to amaze me this season. He was rock-solid last year and I've found him to be constantly bad at stopping any straight shots one-on-one. Why? What changed? No idea. Personally, he'd better up his game because the Playoffs will be much harder for him otherwise.

True. Non-trade clauses sure throw curveballs to whomever wishes to deal players with one.

Having said that, imagine if the Penguins get eliminated in the first round! All of those picks (and Joe Morrow) will have been for naught. That'd be one hell of an upset. It'll be interesting to see which team will end up facing them. A Bruins/Penguins matchup would be the most interesting one (to me).

FWIW, the Habs lost 1-0 against the Pens a couple of days ago and they didn't have Prust, Bourque, or Diaz in their lineup. So it *is* possible to play well against them. I'll be keeping an eye out to see how many losses the Pens get before the season's over now that they're stacked.

I didn't see what provoked Armstrong, the replay we got on the US national broadcast showed the end of the play - you may be right.

I'm sorry to hear that Marchant was on the embellishment wagon - it certainly wasn't a factor in last night's game. Totally OK to call him out on it. Knowing Marchant that is probably more gamesmanship than whining but off-putting and unnecessary either way.

Interesting comment on Price, does Budaj's performance last night get him more time in goal?

I agree.

The more interesting question is what do Calgary fans think of the two offers on the table. Did the B's offer more and Iginla make the Flames take less. If so, I'd be a little ticked off if I was a Flames fan. However, if they were close, it would be easier for me to accept the decision again, as a fan. Or are Albertans less judgemental than New Englanders and would understand that Iginla's contract allows him to make a choice and the Flames either trade him where he wants or keep him if they don't like the deal.

I wasn't following hockey closely when Bourque went to Colorado but Wiki is saying that Bourque went with the trade that the team engineered (and it worked out for him.)

I hear Martin St. Louis is a B's target - I'd love to see him Black and Gold (and not Pen's Black and Gold - how much room to they have under the cap anyway???????) :D

All I can tell you is what I saw on my end. That was the whole video. If something else happened beforehand, I wasn't privileged to have seen it. Did you see everything I described or just the elbow?

Yeah. I don't have a vendetta against him. I'd be irked no matter who said it from any team. These people are supposed to be professional athletes with more mental fortitude than this. Moreover, there are plenty of YT videos clearly displaying Marchand diving or embellishing so you'd think he'd be wiser than to shoot off his mouth. :hmm:

Interesting comment on Price, does Budaj's performance last night get him more time in goal?
We'll see. If I'm the coach, I don't play favorites and play who's hot. But Price is paid like a #1 so he may play again next game. Here's something you might not be aware of ; it's the goalie who let in the winning goal who gets the win or loss. So because Budaj let in one last goal after taking over, he's the one credited with the win. That means that he's 5-1-1 so far this season.

He's been a pro and kept a good attitude. After last night's game, I'd personally say that buys him a start for next game.

I hear Martin St. Louis is a B's target.
Impossible unless Chiarelli makes huge changes.

Here's why...

In the off-season, the Bruins will need to sign (or re-sign) 2 defensemen and a backup goaltender who'll become Unrestricted Free Agents (UFA). Without these 3 players, the Bruins' cap is already at roughly $58 million, the ceiling being $64.

St. Louis has a cap hit of $5.6 million for the next 2 years. In theory, he'd replace Horton whose contract expires this season. But, as I said, the team would already be at the ceiling and they need to get 2 more players.

That means that a trade would be necessary, most likely a salary dump for draft picks. If they want to take a risk, they can forego re-signing Ference and stick with an AHL prospect who wouldn't cost much in an entry-level contract. But that, IMHO, would severely impact the defense pairs. Hamilton is progressing well, though.

And ALL of this would be based on whether St. Louis would even agree to leave Tampa Bay at all! It's been his home for 13 years and he might even be a family man which would make a trade even less likely.

The number one pick went to Chicago and Philadelphia wound up with Van Riemsdyk.
...who's tied for goals on the Leafs with 14.

He'd be tied with Voracek if he were playing for the Flyers.

After you look at Voracek, Giroux, and Simmonds, nobody has more than 7 goals. Luke Schenn, for who they traded Van Riemsdyk, has 2.

Schenn is a shutdown stay-at-home d-man and his performance shouldn't be measured in goals, but this team is craving for secondary scoring which they could've had had they kept VR. But it's easy to be wise in hindsight.

I'm really hoping that Budaj gets more play. Price has certainly not earned the top spot. The Habs are getting 3-4 goals a game and still winning or losing by one goal.
BTW..your comments were very reasonable and provacative....yet your sig says you are from Boston...surely this must be an error???

Thanks. No error, I'm a bass player, we tend to be pretty reasonable no matter where we are from.

Horton would likely be part of it - not sure what the rest of the plan would be.

I am loving JVR on the Leafs, he has been playing very well. Kadri has been playing like a man on fire lately too. 7 of the last 8 points for the men in blue, three of those against the B's.

Edit: I should also note that Lupel has 7 goals in the 5 games that he has been back from injury.
