JR wants that cap space. If Sheary scores 20 goals or Buf trades Hunwick the pick will move up to the 3rd round.
Trying to play the guessing game of who Rutherford might be after with his new cap space.
Couldn't be Tavares, Carlson is already signed. Kind of hoping they don't bring back Neal. Sure he can score but gosh he'd always take the stupidest penalties (usually in the Offensive-zone, too!) Perhaps a Karlsson deal in the works?
Probably end up being a couple of role-players. Sheahen, Oleksiak, et al. Gotta have them, too. Also hearing Columbus' Jack Johnson is on their radar.

@MarkMaddenX first reported that the Penguins intend to sign defenseman Jack Johnson Sunday to a five-year deal. Confirming that. Source says it will be in the $16 million range total (between $3-$3.5 million AAV).

Totally agree about the five years being too long.
I think he's a decent d-man, and he could benefit from a new start. What his parents did to him and this past season with reduced ice time has affected his on-ice performance. We'll see.

I hadn't heard about Kuhnackl. I liked parts of his game, but the truth is he just couldn't skate very well for an NHL'er, nor did he have good hands. Decent on the PK, but contributed nothing offensively.
Sheahen just re-upped for another year. I've done a 180 on him. Thought he was a bust when he came over but quietly became a semi-vital piece as the season went on.

I think they had to give him that many to get the cap hit down.
My bold prediction is that whenever he signs, the JT contact will be viewed as a huge mistake within 3 years. The only exception is for the Islanders, who will be viewed as having been forced into the mistake.
Just heard on the radio that JT has decided that he is out of the Island! The two remaining contenders for his services are apparently Toronto and San Jose.
If Toronto gets him, we will have three first line centres on the team.... JT, Austin Matthews and Nazim Kadri... I'm gonna have to stop thinking about it as I find myself drooling on my keyboard!

He'd be playing in his home town, for a team that he watched as a kid. He's almost a point a game player, played all 82 games last year and has been the best player on a bad team for years.

I tend to agree with him being somewhat overrated, but not as much as some players are. He's been basically a point-per-game guy while playing on some shi**y teams. (621 pts in 669 GP)
I didn't think Toronto had the cap space, but maybe that's changed or being worked on as we speak. I'm also surprised he would accept the pressure of playing in a place like TO, hometown or not.

The Leaf's will have freed up close to $9mil by not signing Bozak and Van Riemsdyk. They can fill the other forward spots with players from their farm team that just won the Calder Cup. They just need some help on the blue line and it should be a great season to come!

This may ruffle a few feathers, but after watching the Marlies playoff run, I am no longer convinced we need to give Nylander a big contract either, looks like a few of those kids are the same mold as he is.....
Hmmm...the braintrusts behind the last few Team Canada squads don't seem to agree...but then again, all they did was win everything....
Not many of those guys on the 2014 Olympic team have won a SC. The 2018 team had no current NHL players.
So if NHL success is secondary, then I concede.
But hey, I suppose fans from Toronto feel winning the SC is so far from reality that the other successes take precedence.

Was more referring to 2016 World Championship than 2018 Olympics. But the last two time Canada picked their best players, JT was right in the mix. And all they did was win gold both times. And...not like he is old and washed up, just right in his prime.

I think y'all should blow out your roster to make room for him. He's probably the missing piece for the Leafs.
Maybe Tavares/Matthews is the next Crosby/Malkin.

If I'm JT I've already ruled out TB, and here's why: you don't know what your getting. TB can't fit JT into the fold under the cap - they'd have to move some people to do so. So the team they have right now isn't the team you'd actually be signing with. Who knows what key piece might be moved off? Why walk into that kind of uncertainty? It's not the safe bet.
