Although we discussed this subject earlier in this thread, I'm thinking now would be a perfect time for Jagr to skate into the sunset wearing the Penguins' crest on his chest. Team is certainly not going to make it to the Finals again, and Jags would likely provide a needed inspirational boost, at least for a short time. Plus it would be a nice Hallmark moment for the team and the league. :crying:

Matt Murray has left the Pens indefinitely to care for a personal matter.
While I certainly hope Murray is able to care for his personal matter, and agree with him being away from hockey to do so, it won't hurt my feelings to see him gone.
Jarry gets more quality playing time so Rutherford can see just what he has in Jarry and now DeSmith too.
Maybe trade Murray to Las Vegas for Fleury.

Pens looked good last night against the Rangers, and also the day before vs Detroit. Looks like the bye week didn't hurt at all. And the guys who are paid to score are actually doing the scoring. That'll get you far come April and May.

Still not expecting the three-peat, but I'm feeling better about the team than I was throughout December.

Seguin looking like Malkin tonight as he gets the game winner over his former team. Still, 13 in a row for Boston with at least a point and I think it's back to last year since they lost in regulation.



I like how the NHL shows condensed games on the channel they have for Hulu. I watched the NYR/PIT game in under 10 minutes. I forgot how sweet that Kessel goal was.

I miss the pre-dangle days when you'd just lay a dude out flat on the ice if he got fancy.

(Unless it's Matthews, god help you if you touch Matthews.)

Nice to see them scoring 5 on 5 instead of just relying on the power play.

60 years ago today, the first black man played an NHL game and he went on to be a pretty good player.
The Pens four game winning streak came crashing to a stop after the Ducks blew them out in the second and never looked back.
I'm supposed to go to the Sharks game Saturday, but I think I'll back out.

Boston is an interesting place - the Bruins had the first black NHL'er and the Red Sox were the last MLB to integrate. In fact, it was two seasons after Willie O'Ree suited up for the Black and Gold that Pumpsie Green played for the Sox.

O'Ree has been featured on recent Bruin telecasts and is clearly well-loved and respected in the hockey world and the City of Boston is naming a new street hockey rink for him.

Nice win over the Habs last night. The first Bruins goals was a beauty where all three players on the top line touched the puck - Pasternak and Marchand fought for the puck behind the net; Marchand got it and managed from his knees to pass to Bergeron in the slot who passed it to Pasternak who had slid out below the circle for a one-timer that Price had no chance on.

The difference with this team is that last year, if they got behind, they stayed behind. If the game was tied late in 3rd, last year they would give up a late goal; this year they are getting those OT points; and if they were ahead late in the 3rd, they would give up a goal and go to OT where they were roughly 50-50. This year, they are not great in OT but they only get to OT by battling back from a deficit or holding on to a tie against a good team or in the second game of a back-to-back.

Tonight is the second game of a back-to-back and they travel to Brooklyn; fortunately it is a short trip - they may have even taken the train like they did in the Original Six days.

A few other Bruins news items:

Anthem singer Rene Rancourt will be retiring after this season - the guy is 78 and has had this gig since 1975.
McQuaid played for the first time since October and looked good. Miller is sick so McQuaid will play tonight as well.
Chara had a 4:18 shift last night including 1:30 of 5 on 4 penalty killing and 1:00 of 5 on 3 where Montreal could have tied the game at 2 but failed to score. The B's don't put him on the power play any more to try to cut his minutes but they have him out there for the PK.

Give up a 2 goal lead going into the 3rd, lose in OT.

I guess that's 2 points to keep us in a comfortable playoff spot, but left 2 points on the table, all while showing that we'll never beat the surging Bruins in the first round.... again.

Casey DeSmith makes his first start in the NHL and holds the Kings to one goal, making some impressive saves all night as the Kings came at him hard. 31 shots from LA.
I remember watching DeSmith play at UNH, so that was cool to see him playing in the NHL.
Impressive post game interview too.

I wonder how many games Dustin Brown gets for that cross check on Schultz. No excuse for that hit.

I didn't really think the Brown hit was as terrible as some of his other historic cheap shots, but once again, there was absolutely no reason for it. He claims Schultz toe-picked immediately before he hit him, but replay shows otherwise. Another bonehead hit by Brown.

A couple years ago, back when the Coyotes were an NHL team, they played the Kings in the WC Finals. Mere seconds before LA won the series in OT, Brown sticks his leg out and nearly ended Michal Rozsival's career. Then he tries to explain to Shane Doan in the handshake line that it wasn't intentional. Yeah, right.

Liked him on the US Olympic team, but not so much anywhere else.

EDIT: Just saw the clip of Geno racking Brown between the legs earlier in the game. Can't help but think it couldn't happen to a nicer guy.
