Habs started that second period with a vengeance, but they're fragile. As soon as the Bruins started to take control, it broke the Habs' backs and they spent the rest of the game flailing.
The Bruins were similarly fragile for several years recently... when Claude Julien was their coach...

It's too bad about Claude. I really liked him but it was clear that the Bruins weren't responding to his coaching style. Speaking to that, I think the game has gone in a markedly different direction now in general. As a saying goes, Claude seems to want to win games 0-0. And that's the difference with the Bruins now - they involve everyone on the ice in the offensive aspects in addition to team defense. You can see now how much more involved the defense has become in the offensive game plan. Much more aggressive offensive game plan. Tough to argue with the results.
That was a bit better. The kids showed what they could do in the third period, was fun to watch.

I like him and respect him, but the game changes all the time and he doesn't. If he coaches another four or five years more, defense might come back into fashion.
Regardless, I'm happy with Butch Cassidy and the Puckdance Kids. One wonders what a Cassidy/Seguin pairing might have produced...
Yeah, think about that for a minute...a happy Seguin on this Bruins team. Holy crap! Maybe Seguin would never have been a good fit for today's Bruins from a chemistry standpoint, but ultimately there was no doubt that the Stars got the best of that deal. Hurts to think about...Seguin lights up the Bruins every time they meet now.
Bruins train keeps on rolling, even though NJ put 20 shots on Rask in the 1st period alone (NJ is in a gut-check phase right now), the Bruins fought it off - without McEvoy, who had a heart procedure and is out for 2 weeks - and hung on for the 3-2 win. That's 17 games in a row without a regulation loss.

DeSmith delivers for the Pens after the lame West Coast trip. Ward played great too, just let a couple more get by than DeSmith did.

That's a nasty blow, wow. He certainly tried to make it look like he was making a play on the puck, too.
I'm liking DeSmith a bit. Hoping he can get quite a few starts under his belt. Murray's back and practicing though and for some reason he's viewed as a golden child, so I'm sure he'll be back in sooner than later. Pens keep showing some life and act as if they at least want a wild card spot, but then lose some really dumb games in really dumb ways.
Murray still has to go to his father's funeral this weekend so Desmith & Jarry will probably be it until next week. It looks like Sullivan is going to ride Desmith while he's hot. At least I hope he does.
Murray benefited from Fleury as a team mate and great timing. Everyone here knows how I feel about choosing him over Fleury.
Just imagine how much better DeSmith and Jarry could be if the Pens kept Fleury and let him wind down his Pens career mentoring those two.
I realize Fleury was out and missed a bunch of games, but he's sitting on top of the NHL for GAA (1.75) and save percentage (.944). Not to mention the leadership and experience he brought to the locker room. Heck, look what it did for Murray who is just an average goalie that can't stop a glove side high shot if his life depended on it.

Marchand can't seem to shake being a punk, which is a shame because he's incredibly skilled. 5 game suspension for him. Knucklehead. As always with bonehead plays and bonehead players, you have to wonder why on earth he did it. Another hurdle for the Bruins to jump. Just when you thought Marchand had turned the corner and become a real team leader...nope. Thankfully, Bergeron is, was, and always will be a class act.
We were just talking about Marchand a few pages ago and how he has been quiet so far this season.

That nasty streak he has might have been more typical of players 40 years ago, but with all of the head-hit awareness going on, and the trend toward less "bone crushing" style of play, one can only conclude that Marchand simply cannot help himself. Can't fix stupid.
