They still only have about $2m in space, they'd have to move another $3-4m to land anyone significant. Should be an interesting weekend.

As for the Leafs, I don't expect much before the deadline. If the trade off their UFA's (JVR, Bozak, Komarov) they are basically giving up this season to build for next. Therefore, they'll walk at the end of the season for nothing.
However, as much as it pains me, I don't see the Leafs getting through Tampa and Boston to get through to the conference finals. I think we are still rebuilding (The 5 year Shanaplan) and to think otherwise would be wistful daydreaming. So maybe they do trade them for minor roster players and picks/prospects. Leafs Nation would be up in arms though, our blue-colored glasses only see Stanley after decades of mediocrity.

Like more than one of us here, I am already changing my original opinion of this trade. Losing Cole was bad enough, but throwing in Reaves and all those high draft picks, too? All of a sudden I'm not near as psyched as I was earlier in the day. Still glad they got him, but my exuberance has been tempered somewhat.

True what grrg63 said about Reaves not getting minutes in the playoffs, but there's still 20 games to go and 87 & 71 & 81 still need some protection.

I honestly don't know anything about Dunn...whether he'll ever don a Penguins' jersey or if he's a throwaway like the guys lumped in with the Kessel trade.

Although there are high odds against it, a Final featuring the Pittsburgh and Vegas is not out of the realm of possibility.

Can't wait to see what the rest of the weekend brings trade-wise!

What a crap showing from the Pens tonight. They dug in decently and got it back to 5's, but then (yet even more) pretty ugly defensive breakdowns lead to great chances and a notch for FL to seal the game away. Not having Cole out there was glaring, to me. I don't understand trying to overload the offense at the huge cost of weaking that already fragile D corps. It'll be interesting to see if any other moves are made to shore that up, but, with barely anything left in cap space, I can't see anything earth shattering happening. Management keeps saying they are making deals to win now, even forsakening the future to do so, but I don't see it. Maybe I'm confused, or too defensively minded... guess we'll find out as these last ~20 games wrap up.

I've said before that IMO Rick Nash is the most overrated forward in the game, and he disappears every April. And I think Boston gave up too much. But on the other hand, perhaps he'll fit in the B's system and prove me wrong. Hope not, for several reasons.

Yeah, I agree on the Plekanec trade...didn't see Toronto in the mix for him. But you're probably on to something regarding Mathews' injury.

Talk is Karlsson will be dealt today, ahead of the deadline. Is it too late for the Pens to get Ian Cole back?

Even though this is the NHL thread, Ima post about the Olympics. Germany...what the hell were you thinking? You had the game won, less than three minutes left, on the power play, and couldn't play smart defense for the last couple minutes? Geez, I did NOT want to see the arrogant Russians win this one.

I think the Nash trade will be interesting. Could go either way. They traded Spooner's speed and youth for Nash's experience and front-of-net presence, which they are sorely lacking IMO. Spooner was due a big pay day at the end of this year, and I don't think the B's were going to pay it anyway, so he was all but done. Both teams benefited by unloading some cap space, but the Bruins gave away some prospects, where they happen to be pretty deep right now....not that I like giving away a #1 pick, though.

If Nash can work well within the Bruins system, I think it's a good situation. If I were defending Boston, I'd much rather take my chances with Spooner on the puck than with Nash. Should make their power play a bit more effective, too. Spooner is a nice player, but the Bruins definitely need some complimentary elite talent, and Nash is closer to that than Spooner will ever be IMHO. If Cassidy couldn't get it out of him in the last 12 months, I just don't think it's really ever going to be there. He's definitely not producing like a top tier 2nd liner. Heinen and DeBrusk show far more potential in the long term.

Bruins have shown on this road trip that they are capable of losing to the garbage of the league in painful fashion. They've looked pretty bad against the Canucks and now the Sabres. I'm sure they're tired at the end of this road trip, but man...just awful.

I think the Bruins overachieved and are ready for a fall back to earth. I don't necessarily see any of the moves the Bruins made as being terribly significant for the run up to the playoffs, other than just to sure up depth in a few key places. Spooner and Nash are such different players, and Nash clearly has shown elite ability during his career. Time will tell whether he's really a good fit.

Any signings have to be before 3pm EST today for free agent signings, basically a roster freeze after the trade deadline.

And I've re-thought my opinion of the Plekanec signing after seeing various reviews. Good depth move, still not sure about giving up another 2nd round pick though.
