NHL Season 2018-19

Well, interesting start to the season. Did not like seeing McElhinney being lost, guess we will have to see how good Sparks is against NHL teams now. (hint - 6 goals a game might not be good enough....just saying...) Matthews and JT looking real good out of the gate, but still think we didn't deserve the W against the Habs. Looks like scoring will not be an issue though. Leafs have got much better each year for the last two years, and seem to be a bit improved this year too. BUT....both the last two years they lost the first playoff series in a long series against bigger and tougher teams. They seem to have addressed that issue by getting smaller and less tough....Hmmm...going to be an interesting 6 (or maybe 8???) months for the Blue and White.

It definitely seems right now that the NHL is very offense focused. I'm not overly thrilled about it... high scoring games just don't get me excited. It'll be interesting to see how the rest of this season plays out. I don't have much hope for the Pens this year... could use a couple of years with no post-season to regroup.

No playoffs?!? Oh, heck no! Not with Sid & Geno entering their 30s...now is the time to go for it all, before those two get long in the tooth. When 87 hangs them up, then consider a rebuild, but not while he's still arguably the best overall player in the game.

Trouble is, Rutherford did very little this past off-season, other than unloading Hunwick and bringing in Johnson. Unless he's got some big surprise move he's planning at this year's deadline, you're right, there isn't much optimism about them going deep in the playoffs as they currently sit.

I hope they entirely miss the playoffs this year, yes. I say that as a Pens fan. The team has had a lot of skill, and a lot of luck. The skill is diminished -- traded away and poor decisions abound. Luck should only carry them so far. Yes, it would be awesome for Sid and Geno to lift another cup. But, I also think that the front office needs to realize that their poor decisions have consequences, and missing the playoffs would, hopefully, do that.

What we're seeing with Murray is what Pens fans will get. He definitely benefited from having Fleury on the roster. There is no chance the Pens win either of those cups without Fleury. Zero.
Fleury was run out of town, Murray has a couple cups and a fat contract extension. He's set.
He's not magically going to get any better than he is now, and probably actually worse as @Selta alluded to with the concussions.
It used to blow my mind how the Pens sold out Fleury for Murray, then I did some extra reading. Murray and Sullivan are buddies from the Baby Pens. It all makes sense now.

The one in the middle??? ;)

Don't feel too badly, Pens fans. The Flyers, (a team I've followed faithfully for more than 4 decades) gave up 8 goals to the Sharks tonight, while only able to tally 2 themselves. And this was their home opener. (I blame that ridiculous mascot, "Gritty"...) :D In 3 games, they've given up 15 goals. Looks like another suck-fest of a season ahead...

I remember that, but from the early-mid 70s. What was the cartoon puck they had? Peter Puck or something like that. The Flyers had Tony and Phil Esposito. Them and the Habs were like the Red Sox and the Yanks back then.
Pens were not good.

Same here. Spring of '75 was when I discovered the sport. Pens were not that bad for a couple of seasons then, but were never a threat for the Cup. If memory serves, they had NINE 20-goal scorers that season. Of course, they gave up just as many as they scored. Just like today!

The Broad Street Bullies were in full force at that time, and they pounded Buffalo into the boards in taking their second Cup. Next up were the Canadiens and their Flying Frenchmen with Lafleur & company, whose speed and grace led to four consecutive Cups, followed by the Islanders' run of four straight. Then came some skinny kid who wore #99...

Those were the days. Of dynastic teams.

I wasn't into pro hockey in the '60s, but I WAS into our local minor league (East Coast Hockey League) team, the Johnstown Jets. That's the team that the "Charlestown Chiefs" were modeled after in 'Slap Shot!" (and where Slap Shot was filmed). My hockey knowledge wasn't very well-honed back then, but the entertainment value was certainly there. Talk about a rough league. Fights all the time (which my rowdy friends and I enjoyed immensely)...

Actually, the Esposito brothers played together for the Black Hawks. Phil also played for the Bruins and Rangers.

When the Flyers first came into the league, they were getting pounded around by everybody. I'm pretty sure it was Buffalo who ultimately led to Philly's transition into the "Broad Street Bullies". After a particularly brutal beatdown by the Sabres, Flyer owner Ed Snyder vowed that his teams would no longer be a punching bag for the league. He brought in some tough guys to protect his more skilled players.
