If you are referencing the Eller antics I disagree; I don't believe Wilson's presence would have changed Marchand's reaction.
It's also well known the NHL is extra tough on repeat offenders. This is nothing new either since they always mentions it factors into their discipline decision.
If a guy doesn't want to be targeted by the refs and the NHL Department of Player Safety, then it's best to make sure you do not give them a reason to.
At this point, it's Tom Wilson who is the poster boy for dirty hits. It'll be someone else at some point.
I remember when it was Matt Cooke, and it bothered me having that guy on 'my' team.

Definitely a different game today. It's similar to football insofar as brutal hits back in the day were praised (Butkus; Taylor; Mean Joe Greene, etc.). Now they're penalized and result in suspensions.
I still don't get Marchand licking opponents. Nor do I get why any of them didn't retaliate immediately. Perhaps they were as shocked to be receiving the licking as we fans were watching it!
I watch the Bruins regularly so I'm aware of those incidents. I disagree that he would have done anything differently but it's an unknown and what happened last night is what happened
Now it's the Pens turn to see if they give up seven to the Caps, and the regular season debut of Jack Johnson.
The Pens secret weapon this year is going to be Juuso Riikola, thus making Maatta dispensable.

Yeah, I'm glad Riikola made the team. He impressed during the preseason...smooooth skater, great hands. Not really what the Penguins needed, another offense-minded defenseman, but he does have promise.
Of course, a lot of us Pens fans were saying much of the same about Olli Maatta during his rookie year. He's basically stagnated since then. (Just noticed this...Riikola is actually 10 months older than Maatta.)

Whether Marchand is intending this or not (more likely not) I believe it's related to his smaller stature and passionate demeanor. I believe that affection/borderline homosexuality can be used as an effective polar opposite to aggression/masculinity for obvious reasons. It's not hard to see how a small player who plays on the edge and receives attention from much larger players would use tactics like that to throw off an opponent knowing he isn't likely to win physically. I know the players he licked aren't exactly huge in comparison but this is the best I can guess. I personally loved it (I know this is unpopular) but I've always respected using odd tactics to avoid making things violent.
Last night was a weird game...I'm a lifetime B's fan but I've loved the Caps almost as long. I would have rather watched the Caps blow out the Leafs (sorry GoLeafsGo!!!) and had the B's open on a different night. I shut off the game in the second period and wrote a song instead so I found a way to make it an emotional success regardless

Results tonight weren't necessarily the ones I wanted but it's so good to have Hockey back, I almost didn't care who won.
Caps score 7 opening night, give up 7 the following night. Still, the 13 goals scored by them is impressive...can they continue that pace? (If they play the Pens every night, maybe!)
As Mike alluded to, Pens' D obviously hasn't gotten any better. I only got to see the third period (and OT) but other than that last-second breakaway, Jack Johnson was all but invisible. Here's hoping for a better showing from the team defensively against Montreal on Saturday.
And Ottawa almost pulled off the upset at home versus the 'hawks. Kind of pulling for those guys this year to not be as bad as the pundits think they will. (I've had a lot of experience like that with the local team here!)

Well I certainly wasn't disappointed with the 3rd line. I think the Flyers are going to be more cohesive as a team. Only 1 game in but I liked what I saw from the youngsters.
Two games, 11 goals allowed for Murray.
The Pens can play all the defense they want, but it's not going to matter with that sieve behind them.

Yeah, that was a bad game to watch. I turned it off when the short handed goal happened. I had some hope that Murray improved in the off time, but, he looks worse in some ways now. The Habs weren't even playing that well. Maatta still disappoints me tremendously. Pens did a bad job taking advantage of the opportunities and those damn turnovers. Pens handed so many golden opportunities to the Habs... oof.
