NHL Season 2018-19

It's one of the "new" stats from a few years ago. Basically means shot attempts while on-ice, similar to shots on goal, but, in this case, shots that aren't necessarily handed by the opposing goalie. It's the NHL's way of attempting to put a metric to puck possession.
To get it, it's basically Shots On Goal + Missed Shots + Blocked Shots. I believe the examples you listed are For - Against while that player was on ice (i.e. 7 for, 0 against, etc)

Next thing you know, it'll be shots in the general direction of the goal + shots watched as they go by + TOI + PIM + number of times the mouth guard is removed/replaced:confused:

Ahhhhhhhh, got it. Thanks buddy.
Maatta and Johnson let the Canadien floodgates open while Letang and Dumoulin kept it shut. Yep, makes sense.

The funny part is (I had to look this up, was just double-checking that I understood the stat correctly), some blogger came up with the stat so the NHL started using it. If their goal was puck possession, why not just, you know, put a time on how long team X (or player if they want to dive down to that level) controls the puck? Seems like a time metric would be much better than this odd confluence of stats.

The better to confuse you with, my son.:wacky:

I know it's only two games in, but I'm considering removing Jack Johnson from my Norris Trophy nominee list. I'm sure they keep stats on giveaways...he'd be leading the league, no doubt.

Heck of a finish last night in Chicago...in the last minute or so (and 19 seconds into OT) had four goals scored. Back and forth. Tie game. Leafs ahead. Hawks tie again. Leafs win in OT. Thrilling stuff.

welp, this happened -

Penguins goaltender Matt Murray has been diagnosed with a concussion.
Coach Sullivan on Murray: “The injury happened in practice yesterday. There is currently no timetable on his return.”
Hah, I was coming here to post the same news. Two concussions in quick order like this is not good for his long term health... and he'll be more susceptible to concussions too, going forward. Not looking so great for the "franchise goalie" :-/

Geez, you both beat me about posting about Murray...I must be slowing down. Much like Murray's reflexes, come to think of it. :bored:
He hasn't slown down, but he certainly hasn't improved or changed that much. His days of riding Fleury's coattails are long gone and I think more folks are clued in on Murray's real ability now. Too bad with the injuries, he lost any great trade value he may have had.

I guess when yer seeing 2 or 3 pucks at once, it's hard to decide which one to catch.

Yeah I know my comment was a tad harsh, but it's frustrating to see a guy with two Cups under his belt get beat by weak shots repeatedly. He just can't seem to get over that hump of mediocrity, whether it's injuries, concussions, or mental/emotional baggage. Hoping he can get back to the level he was at in the Finals.
