NHL Season 2018-19

Saw an article the other day that places Toronto (yes, Toronto!) in the top five Cup contenders, ahead of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Hey, the Leafs are certainly closing the gap between pretenders and contenders but I can't see them being favored over the Pens, with their pedigree and recent success. Of course, Murray is the wildcard in any of the Pens success (or failure), but overall, there's still a lot of experience and skill to win another one.

Can't wait for the season to begin!

Yeah the leafs are certainly a strong contender now. As far as favored over the Pens, well the Caps beat them last year, and they finished the season with the identical record as the leafs.
So anything’s possible.

As far as the inevitable “But the Leafs defense...”
Well, maybe, but they were the only team with two 50 point dmen, and a couple high end young talents coming up.( and no Polak, lol)
I’d say the Leafs D is actually better than the Pens. And we have 3 strong forward lines with 3 elite centers.

I’m not saying we are gonna win the cup this year, but I am saying that I’ve got my seat picked out for the parade, lol

You, me, and everybody else would say that about the Pens' D! No argument here. The biggest positive thing Rutherford did for the defense this summer was unload Matt Hunwick. Addition by subtraction, one might say. But don't forget we brought in Jack Johnson! LOL. All kidding aside, I think he'll be an upgrade...others here feel differently. (Am I right @MJ5150 ?)

Ahahaha, having a defense better than the Pens ain't much to brag about, but if it makes @DerekW feel better, then go with it bro. ;)
As for Mr. Johnson, I feel like this could be a move that ends up costing Rutherford his job.

I'd love to see Toronto win the Stanley Cup. Really.
When I first started learning about the NHL, Toronto was like the gold standard of hockey in my mind. They haven't been all that good for awhile, so it'd be cool to watch them turn it around.
I don't think Tavares will be the reason though if they do.

Much gnashing of teeth in Cbus about the imminent departure of Panarin and Bobrovski to FA next season. Neither wants to stay, evidently.

Cbus' GM is doing a good job, and he's drafting well and building a good team slowly but surely. But they both want a taste of that 'winning culture' Johnson mentioned. They probably realize it's not gonna happen under Tortorella.

They bought themselves the last place in NHL so they'll have a better chance to draft first ......

Is(are) there a particular player(s) that they are targeting? Any can't-miss superstars in next years draft that are worth tanking for? Or is it particularly deep where a team has a pretty good chance at a top-6 forward or top-4 defenseman halfway down the draft.

Sens GM Dorion traded away their first round pick to Colorado in the Duchene trade. He could have gave them either this years or next, but decided to keep this year’s, and took Brady Tkachuk with their #4 pick.
My guess is (if the Habs don’t suck worse) that they will be giving away a number one pick next year, and the Duchene doesn’t extend with them, so they end up with nothing.
And Dorion ends up looking for a new job.

Edit: OTT did get a first round pick from SJ for either 2019 or 2020, so it really depends on how SJ does this year, if they go deep in the playoffs, they’ll give them their pick this year (probably) but if you’re the worst team in the league and you get the 30th pick, you dun screwed up.

As long as Matt Murray is the primary Pens goalie, there will be no more Stanley Cups in Pittsburgh.

Starting on Murray already lol!

He’ll have a bounce back year this year I’m betting.
Father died, concussions, first year as a starter... he had it all going against him last year.
Hopefully he worked on his high glove side though, lol
