Thanks for posting this. Did the announcers eventually say this because I missed it. My first thought when watching the replay was the same as GoLeafsGo - that it was offside and the goal would be disallowed.

I had the volume off late last night watching the replay, so didn't hear it

The radio feed from Boston went through the video replays and the rulebook. Radio guys are good like that

The ref didn't say that though over the PA, and should have.

A lot of people probably missed the explanation on that from the live feed, suggesting the announcement wasn't made. But the Bruins player clearly did not exit the zone, and that's all they showed

Wow. Lot's of smug Bruins fans out there....the third goal WAS offside and should have been called back, and then no PP to start the period. He did not have possession of the puck and had both skates over the blue line before the puck entered the zone. That would have made it 2-0 instead of 4-0. Entire game changed by (yet another) bad call.

After watching that game I really don't have much to say. It would be really nice if the finals were at least one of the more interesting series of the playoffs but I really don't see it getting much better. At least we probably won't have to hear that stupid Gloria song anymore.

Totally agree. Hockey is a winter sport. The Cup should be hoisted before Memorial Day. Over the years, I've heard talk of shortened seasons/contraction, but that would mean loss of revenue and we all know that won't fly.

I still think that one of the best regular seasons in memory was the last lockout-shortened one. The games mattered so much more and I ended up following a lot more closely and watching way more than usual in the regular season.

As for Berube, I can't think any reason why he won't get an extended contract after the series is over. He's proven his ability to be the coach beyond all doubt

As I saw the play, neither player had control over the puck as it crossed the blue line, but the Boston player had both skates over the blue line prior to the puck crossing the line. And that makes the play offside.

It's not just us you're disagreeing with.

Remember the wailing and gnashing of teeth that (rightly) followed the Hand Pass Debacle and the Fake Five Minute Major Debacle. You're seeing none of that from fans, writers, commentators, or the national hockey pundits after that third goal, largely because the officials actually got the call right.

Not that it mattered. The Blues were hopelessly outclassed in that game. Nothing the officials did on that third goal changed the outcome.

But when Toronto is the one who handed down that decision, you can bring it up with them

It'll be interesting to see how Binnington rebounds. It's easy to forget he's basically a rookie (albeit 25 yrs old) and this is his first half-season in the NHL. Being shellacked like that in the Finals might be too much to bounce back from quickly. Or not. Hoping he can push it out of his head and lock in for the remainder of the series.

Quite amazing how people are enjoying it. Not only is there "Jurassic Park" outside the arena, but just about every suburb of Toronto is hosting their own version...Mississauga, Burlington, Brampton, Ajax...there were almost 10,000 at the one in Mississauga. Last count there were 36 communities across Canada with Raptors approved public viewing parties. Cineplex Theatre chain even had a bunch of their theatres broadcasting the game live.

I guess you could grapple with 83.1 as to whether the Blues player controlled or intentionally passed the puck back into his defending zone, but it seems that rule 83.2 expands on that to include deflections that are not caused by direct action from an attacking player:

"83.2 Deflections / Rebounds - If a puck clearly rebounds off a defending player in the neutral zone back into the defending zone, all attacking players are eligible to play the puck. However, any action by an attacking player that causes a deflection/rebound off a defending player in the neutral zone back into the defending zone (i.e. stick check, body check, physical contact), a delayed off-side shall be signaled by the Linesman."

The way I read this - and please correct me if I'm wrong - is that UNLESS a Bruins player initiated some form of contact with the Blues player or his stick in the neutral zone, an offside attacking player is free to play the puck. There was no such contact on the Blues player by a Bruins player, thus no offside. Thoughts?
