There are a few things we can say about that series and the Avs, all true:

  • Gru won that series as much as the Avs lost it. He was superb. Any performance less than what he gave, and MacKinnon and Rantanen would have managed to win the series for the Avs.
  • Doubtful the Avs would have gotten past Dallas, they really did look tired and unlike last season absolutely none of the depth guys stood up.
  • Landeskog might be done. Just reading between the lines. That would be sad.
  • Whatever is going on with Nichushkin is a lot more complex than what we know on the day I write this. You don't abandon your team in the middle of the playoffs because you got caught drinking in your hotel room before a game, possibly with a lady for hire. That behavior is revolting, but you don't get shuttled to the airport never to be heard from again for only that.
  • Avs need a second line center, badly.
  • Georgiev was fine. I think he let in one soft goal in every game (always glove side high) but was otherwise solid. Don't need to spend free agent $ there IMO.

Really though, it's an elite program again with some good years ahead of it. The Kraken 100% won that series and deserved to (and so far it looks like they might surprise Dallas too). I expect the Avs will be in the hunt again next year, probably stronger than this year.

I say this having endured a long drought; I'm old enough that I was an active fan in '96 and '01.

Hmmm... my 2023 NHL team favorite hopes for this year have been DASHED, so I am regressing to what I hope to see out of the next round, which would be Leafs-vs-Devils and Kraken-vs-Knights.
That result would be WIN-WIN for me as any of those four I'll be pleased to see as The Champs!
Having grown up in Canada in the 1960s, obviously Leafs are the sentimental favorite, BUT...

Paul Bissonette hit the nail on the head in his post-game analysis. Once again, he said, the big stars of the Leafs are invisible. I'd have to agree.

Yeah, the Panthers are playing tough defensively, but that's why you're getting paid $11M a year, to step up and elevate your game, not fade away. Matthews, Tavares, Marner, O'Reilly...kept off the scoresheet in (basically) a must-win game. And now down 0-3, with injured goalies. Not looking good. I was really hoping they'd make a long run this year.

On the other hand, props to the Panthers. They smell blood and are pouncing all over their opponent.

Blackhawks land the #1 pick, also known as the Connor Bedard sweepstakes. Had a strong feeling they would get it anyway. Not saying a fix was in, (cough cough), but somehow just knew they'd be awarded the pick.

Funny, but some teams are constantly ridiculed and mocked for allegedly tanking (Arizona, Columbus) yet somehow 'Hawks get a pass. Not once did I read a negative article about Chicago's goal of finishing last.

Regardless, good for the 'Hawks and their fans. Curious to see if his speed and skill will overcome his lack of size against NHL caliber D-men.

Things are not looking good for our heroes...the sharks in the press are all swarming...they too smell blood.
