No shorts in gig contract

After seeing many, many, many bands playing in shorts for festivals and other outdoor gigs in the heat and humid of our summers and NOT hearing much comment from anyone attending those shows, I can only conclude that this is a much bigger problem for TB members than it is for the general public.

dude you just made it 11.

maybe 10% of this thread is actually related to stage appearance. maybe half of that 10% is of substance. That's ok considering that the OP was tongue in cheek and poking fun of the situation for the most part.
Truth be told, every gig has a written or unwritten dress code. The trick is knowing what that dress code is when it hasn't been discussed. No point in anyone being defiant and all "I wear whatever I want- rocknroll furever, beaches!!!!!!" and going off the rails on an internet forum, there are no absolutes when it's not written in the contract. Some gigs shorts might be ok. others shorts might be in poor taste and make the band look like Carl Spackler just clocked out and picked up a guitar (that might be cool on Halloween, but Muffy's wedding would be a bad call for the floppy hat). We should all try not to get our knickers in a twist and think about it. Making a blanket statement that "I have to wear shorts on stage because XXX" is just as silly as "no one should wear shorts on stage ever".

Again, I disagree completely. Wearing shorts does not have to make you look like Carl Spackler. Saying I have to wear shorts when it is pushing 100 degrees or I will pass out is completely legit compared to no one should ever wear shorts because I can’t imagine how you could dress well in shorts.

Two completely different kinds of statements.

that's not what I said and you know it. Try to get your locomotive back on the tracks.

What I said is there are no absolutes on either side of the argument. Press F2 for the knickers untwisting function.

You are correct. I am a pro player, and work with plenty of really great playing pros who use clip-ons. I don't care for the look of them on my bass but I use them all the time and they're terrific.

I have one, and the advantage is I can see it. One multis effects often they are hard to read unless I'm wearing vision correction. I might see if my ancient Arion pedal tuner still works

Well, when the gig outside on a triple digit heat index day, I’m wearing shorts, and I do a lot of these outdoor concerts. There are shorts, and there are shorts. They don’t have to look sloppy. Country club golf gear is more than acceptable in these parts.

I was just reminded of why a dress code is needed. My brothers band was playing in Key West a couple years ago. There was a live feed of the gig so I tuned in to see my bass player friends junk prominently displayed for everyone. While I'm watching the live feed, I texted my brother to let him know. I watch as my bro receives the text, tell the dude and the whole band laugh mid song.

Knickers are fine. Just plainly stating that someone’s opinion on shorts and the appearance of someone wearing them does not have the same merit or legitimacy as someone saying they need to wear shorts for a good reason, like their performance will suffer if they get heat prostration. No false equivalence between those two arguments from me. And I am totally calm, cool as a cucumber right now.

Nothing clashes with a surf green Jazz! Nothing. BTW, I saw you guys at Doheny last year (my band played Doheny the year before) and I loved your set. Damn Casey can saaaang! The whole band was great. I need to see you guys play again soon! I just saw on facebook that Anthony is going to play full time now too.. very cool.
