No shorts in gig contract

Sounds like a typical corporate gig. Sucks the fun and joy out of playing music. Makes one feel like an employee. They would stipulate 'no shorts' if a pencil neck thinks of it. Should pay three times a casual

It usually does :D

It is totally reasonable, in days gone by, if you wouldn't wear a tuxedo, you didn't get the gig. If you band looks like they rifled a dumpster for stage clothes- they deserve not to get the good gigs.

it's still true: the best paying gigs are 'dress up'...maybe a tux, a suit, a tie, yada yada (the idea is to give the impression that you are in show business!). those of you who wouldn't consider wearing something which is at least a cut above what the audience wears = pretenders.

:D

Got called for jury duty... they specified no shorts and no tank tops. Said if you didn’t comply they’d send you home and make you come back a different day.
Is “Jury Duty” a band name?
My summons said work attire. I work from home and wear jeans and a t-shirt. That's how I dressed for jury duty. Some of my co-workers say they work in pajamas, guess they can wear pajamas to jury duty. :D

Not gonna lie, I follow a no-shorts policy on stage. Except for specific venues (eg; beach boardwalk festival, back yard bbq) I think shorts look sloppy. And not shorts in general, but the people that generally wear shorts on stage like to wear stuff that's sloppy-looking. Depends on situation I suppose. If you're playing biker bars with an older crowd then I guess your camo cargos and muscle tee fit right in. I'm in a top-40 cover band that plays for 20/30-somethings. Can't show up looking like I was just cleaning the garage.

I just don't like the way I look in shorts. The muscle T is a big no for me. It just looks too redneck. I wear black cargo pants and either a nice T shirt or button down.

Yes, and when you've sold 100 million records, you can wear shorts too. ;)
But he was wearing shorts long before he sold 100 million records, so BS on that tired TB logic.

The other utterly false equivalency on TB is that if you're wearing shorts that you *must* look bad. I have very nice shorts and when paired with a nice button short-sleeved shirt and some snazzy slip-on shoes I look very well dressed, thank you very much. Wearing shorts doesn't mean you're also wearing a sleeveless t-shirt with holes and stains all over it and sandals with long white socks. Come one people, live a little!

I do have linen pants specifically for when my nice shorts are still not nice enough.

My 2 cents:

Are you under ten years old?
Is your name Angus Young?

If you answered 'No' to both of these questions, then 'No' you should not wear shorts.

If the temperature is that high, a pair of linen trousers will keep you cool, comfortable and looking better than you have a right to.
On stage or in general? I swear like crazy even standing still in the shade once it hits 80f.

I used to be a strict 'no shorts' guy... Then I moved to the south. Not only is there the oppressive heat/humidity, it's also a matter of fitting in. Yes, you want to stand out and dress up a notch than the audience, but when literally everyone in the room (and a hundred mile radius) is wearing as little as possible - ya compromise. Especially if it's a sports-bar-with-all-the-TVs-on sort of gig.

All that being said, he who pays the piper calls the tune. Contract says dress up, dress up. Or don't play. Easy as that. 'Art' and 'expression' have precious little to do with it at that stage.

When I worked from home, I sat around in yesterday's t-shirt and my underwear. Last time I was called for jury duty, I failed to wear my "work attire" and was selected....for a jury...on an appeal...for a speeding ticket...of only 9mph over the limit.

Should have gone in just the boxers. Next time, I'll know.

It's no more tired than, "My favorite bass player does it, so it must be OK for me to do it too!"

Then I wasn't talking about you and there is no need to take offense. ;)

I think it's all in how you rock the shorts.

Exactly. I saw Anthrax last night and they killed it. Of course, Scott Ian wore shorts. Now, my father in law's band plays covers (guys in their 50's and 60's) and the members sit on stools/chairs to play (covers like Beatles, CSN, etc.). What irks me is 2 of the guys will wear shorts. If you are sitting facing the audience, don't wear cargo shorts. No one wants a glimpse of sack or even your boxers.

I play in a metal band and have worn the camo shorts on occasion, but usually go jeans. If we played outside in the New Orleans heat/humidity in Summer, I'd rock the shorts. It works in our context though. Now, flip flops or sandals on stage in metal, NO!!!!
