NPD: SA Aftershock

I'm not. I thought it sounded great, but for some reason the combination of offline programming, not a lot of on-the-gig tweakability, and only a few on-board presets didn't quite seem to work for me. But... I'm reconsidering buying another one now...

I also know, given how picky you are, not talkin smack mind you, so you saying the AS was pretty killer, gets me even more excited about it. I know I still can't believe most dirt lovers don't have one on their board. I think the full capability of it with an added HUB is a huge bonus for it though that a lot of guys didn't want to buy into. And there's still a lot of people who just don't buy the "digital dirt" think yet.

I'm thinking I won't be going all in for the HUB at the moment. Or should I... I do have a Lunar, Nemesis, and C4. If I got the Aftershock, it might make sense.

My problem (one of them anyway) is that I play a lot of different stuff, and for the most part I prefer to mess with my effects and their settings on the fly, as inspiration strikes. I don't know if creating scenes offline is conducive to that way of thinking.

Yeah I can see that. But if you did get a hub and dial all those pedals into it and a midi switcher, you can still tweak on the fly. Just have to learn how to navigate presets quickly. Which ain’t bad imo. Once you get the hang of it.

I just plugged all of it in when I got home and realized I have a lot of learning and figuring to do haha it’s def not plug n play once you decide on your midi switcher. But I’m game. And I’ll figure it out. It’s just gonna take some. I’m sorta distracted by a fretless neck I’m trying to refinish. Started sanding on the epoxy yesterday. That also is going to take some time!!! Never ends. But I love it.

Hey so what if my hub isn’t picking up my C4 and I can’t add it under “add new pedal”??

EDIT: sorry guys. I got it. I just needed to update my neuro desktop software. I’ll start reading the manuals more before I post. I get anxious ;)

That's valid though, for any pedal with a deep set of parameters especially.

I personally make sure each of the two customizable knobs are remapped in each of my presets so that I can adjust the preset a little more easily in the moment, especially because I use both Inputs 1 & 2 so unplugging input 2 for the TRS cable just doesn't work for me.
Most of the time I remap atleast one of the knobs to control a Mid Freq point, either Mid A or Mid B, and then I set the other knob to control Clean volume or the Bass level. Then Drive and Volume are used for balancing as usual. It works for me but we're all different.

It took me a while to get comfortable with the Aftershock. Remapping the knobs works for me now but I'd be lieing if I said it was as easy to tune on the fly as my MBD-1 or Big Muff for example.
Most drive pedals only give you around four knobs anyway but don't have nearly as many parameters to play with under the hood. This is like if you had a normal 4 knob drive pedal that also had like 20 trim pots inside the pedal lol Except here you get to decide which parameters are the most important to the preset's voice and prioritize those.

just arrived, the much anticipated Source Audio Aftershock Bass OD/Distortion/Fuzz. I've barely scratched the surface of what this pedal can do (with the software), but so far i'm thoroughly impressed.

check out the extensive list of pedals and parameters!:

I have this pedal too. and it's a pretty killer sounding distortion pedal. I am intrigued by the fact that you can create your own drives with the neuro app. I would describe this pedal as the shang tsung of bass distortion pedals. not too mention that this pedal is a real gas killer. any distortion I may be gassing for, this pedal can provide it with some creative editing. this one is a keeper in my pedalboard.

Out of curiosity, what pedal(s) has the SA kicked off your board? Or dare I say... caused you to sell?!?

I'm a huge tube screamer fan and after A/B-ing the Aftershock against all of my individual tube screamer stomps, it was no contest. The dual engines within the Aftershock allow for such precise adjustment, especially allowing to tailor a clean signal with one of the engines - but a clean signal that I can also adjust a bit to make it more friendly with the distorted signal to sound best with my particular rig. I fell into a pretty deep rabbit hole once I started to understand how to adjust both engines such that I've ended up with more than a dozen usable distortions (not to mention several flavors of "clean" tones).

Of course the usual disclaimer applies in that one doesn't have to dig deep into the options of the Aftershock and can just use presets already on the pedal or burn other community-created presets to the pedal (especially Nathan's) from the cloud but making your own adjustments and tweaks is really pretty easy and taking advantage of that versatility has been a no-brainer for me.

So I've been playing with the Aftershock for a few weeks now and I have a problem. I cannot handle this much freedom. I keep switching presets because I need to try them all and they might be better than the presets I'm using at that moment (and already sound good).

Which brings me also to a problem. How do you remember which setting had which preset. Right now I have to use a notebook so I don't forget :help:

After a while you'll get used to it. You'll find that a few engines become your favorites and you won't be changing things as often.

Impressive list of pedals the Aftershock has replaced thus far with only a few responses... TS variants, Barbershop, TAFM, Vintage Microtubes. Keep’em coming!!

Yeah, if/when I get one of these I imagine I’ll go through the same thing... it’s hard to A/B something when there are near infinite possibilities!
