NPD: SA Aftershock

So do I go against the grain and say it didn’t replace any of mine? Couldn’t get it to emulate cog mini 66, damnation audio mbd 1 or hiero effects bead octave fuzz... that and couldn’t control it when I got a new iPhone ( though have now found I can utilise it with the adaptor) . I’ve states before, if I did use it on my board again I would be loading it with the engines you can’t find anywhere else though, the foldback and gated fuzz stuff are very unique!

For me, it replaced all my dirt except a Mastotron. It's pretty much the only dirt I haven't been able to simulate. There's lots of gated fuzzes on the Aftershock that are great, but I haven't been able to nail that specific sound.

That is how I use it actually. Out of six presets I use four of them for "Foldover", "Peppermint", "Klone", and a rat.

I also have an MBD-1 as well as a Mastotron Fuzz that it can't replace. The MBD-1 is an amazing Distortion of its own, and the sweet spot I dialed in on the Mastotron just isn't available in the Aftershock if you're looking for that square-wave/inorganic/zipper/"Time is Running Out" fuzz tone. I just barely have a good Black Russian Big Muff tone dialed in to Aftershock but I still have my old Black Russian on the board too.

However I do use the Aftershock with my Mastotron to make it better. I have a preset in the Aftershock I feed my Mastotron into to apply a bit of Low Pass Filtering and MIDs EQing to get it to sit in a mix different.

So I've been playing with the Aftershock for a few weeks now and I have a problem. I cannot handle this much freedom. I keep switching presets because I need to try them all and they might be better than the presets I'm using at that moment (and already sound good).

Which brings me also to a problem. How do you remember which setting had which preset. Right now I have to use a notebook so I don't forget :help:

After a while you'll get used to it. You'll find that a few engines become your favorites and you won't be changing things as often.

I've sold my barbershop clon, and taken off my TAFM and my vintage microtubes.
I still have the Spark on, but only use it to give the AS an extra kick.

Impressive list of pedals the Aftershock has replaced thus far with only a few responses... TS variants, Barbershop, TAFM, Vintage Microtubes. Keep’em coming!!

Yeah, if/when I get one of these I imagine I’ll go through the same thing... it’s hard to A/B something when there are near infinite possibilities!

The Aftershock ended my quest to find the perfect dirt, now I have a small pile of pedals to sell and a few to keep for the studio or for posterity. There are a couple of oddities that I could not emulate with the Aftershock as should be the case but there are some very rare pedals I was able to dial in very closely so that I can leave those precious ones where they are safe. Having worked with several builders helped me to understand saturation, gain structures and also tone voice to help me find the sweet spots.
The Aftershock and now the C4 have me totally rethinking my approach to effects on my bass and the sounds that I am looking to use.

It's one of the big advantages of the larger pedal / panel types from Stymon or Eventide...they have big alpha numeric display panels that can display patch names. It sure makes it easier to scroll through banks which a decent display. I have a notepad next to my Aftershock that has a list of patches and their corresponding effect titles.
It's the sacrifice of real estate to make a complex pedal compact and small.
Things are even more complex for me with my pedal board....I have an ES-5 pushing out midi to 5 Midi devices and numerous analogue effects in various loops. I need to note book to keep tract of which pedal is in what loop and what Midi Channel it's using. I also have a list of Boss ES-5 patches on paper just in case of a system failure. I need to know what patch on the ES-5 is doing what to which array of pedals and in which order.

Really struggling to find this pedal in Australia at the moment...new or used...send us some of those sweet orange boxes with the c4 flood please! I am planning on a tier for my board with a one series phaser or chorus, the hub and a nemesis run with a DPC-5 would be killer!

I could depart with mine considering I never use it anymore...

Okay gang, question. Just had a jam session with my rock-friendly buds which meant I had full reign to use new Aftershock. I spent some time scrolling through community presets and there were a ton with insane amounts of feedback... like, screaming noise unless I played a note. Sounded great while playing but I basically had to turn the pedal off when not being used. Is that normal with this pedal? I did have my noise gate on and it was still squealing.

BTW it sounded phenomenal with my Subterranea. Didn't seem to play nice with the C4 though.

You will always have to adjust the input and output to work with your bass, touch and setup. I try to find "unity gain" at home and then find it is best to do a reduced level run through of all sounds rather than at live volume to spare myself (and band mates) the hellish onslaught possible at altitude.

Word, that's what I figured, I'll just find a few patches I like and make sure the levels are adjusted ahead of time. I'll also make sure to have the cable with me so I can try to adjust things on the fly.

Tried the aftershock after a long journey of trying out different dirt pedals, and I found that none of them sat right with me. The aftershock was initially, really solid, but as time sat in, I found that while it had a million good sounds, it didn't have any that were great for me.
Wanderlust gets to us all especially when it comes to finding the perfect dirt pedal, there is always another one or dozen this week to try or buy or :jawdrop:

That's fair. Considering all the other dirt on my board the Aftershock doesn't have my #1 dirt flavor in it. It took lots of twiddling to get sounds out of it I didn't know I wanted and that weren't redundant for my board.
If it wasn't for the flexibility and utility that I do happen to need it for I wouldn't have kept it. For those reasons I love mine but as we say music varies!

I’ve been reading this thread and salivating for far too long, so last night I pulled the trigger on an aftershock from reverb. Here’s a question: if I were to run the pedal with my MS-3 loop switcher, could I use two channels and run the pedal as if it were stereo in order to have two patches I could independently use?

I'm pretty sure you could do stereo-in/stereo out.

My Aftershock is behaving a bit weird. I loaded the factory TS (We All Scream For Tube Scream) on my left preset channel (after I did a factory reset) and now when I select the presets (red LED) the led starts blinking (One 'blink' every few seconds). I've looked through the manual, but is didn't say anything about blinking LEDs.

Does anybody have some insights what this means?
