My Ictineo is on its way. Just picked one up in the classifieds for a fair price so I'm not taking too much of a risk. I say "risk" because I once had a submarine. Not the designer with all the switches but the yellow one with just the two knobs I think. I hated it. It was so incredibly noisy that I couldn't use it. So of course the sound was horrible as well. Then again, it had so much hiss, who knows what it sounded like. But I was reading about this one, reading everyone's thoughts and praise and got interested again.
I'm assuming this one has a much lower noise floor?

There were several versions of the Submarine and early versions did suffer noise with some basses. As refinements went this was improved and the Designer was the ultimate offering tonal options. Generally noise should not be an issue and it is hard to get a "bad" sound out of the pedal.
Southampton has done a fine job reissuing this gem.

That's what I figured. I've spoke a little with @DirtyDuke in the past and he seems like a real stand up guy that shares some of my gear/tone preferences and I like supporting what ever endeavors he and his colleagues are involved in. It's just that submarine left such a bad taste in my mouth, so to speak. I was playing a Fender Jazz through it, so when you say "some basses", I don't know what you needed to play through it for that pedal to sound good. Anyways, I'm looking forward to checking it out, I'm sure it'll be far superior to what I had before, and I really want a 5th Gear....Just sayin'

A jazz is my bass of choice. With an audere preamp. The Ictineo is still dead quiet. I too have had a bunch of submarines. Some quiet. Some not so much. I also have ever other Zeibek pedal ever built except the ampledrive. And some are quiet. Some are crazy noisy.

Most have electrical tape to stop the board from shorting on the case. I hope u enjoy the Ictineo as much as I do.

This is my setup exactly. No noise issues. My tone is defined by the Ictineo. It is my tone. I love it so much.

So the Ictineo works great on j bass. I have one. But for quite a while my primary is my p5. Does it not work for p bass? Can anyone with a p and an Ictineo chime in with their experience?

It sounds fine on a p-bass. Just as good as on a jazz. Amazing preamp

Why would it not work?
You may have to change your settings a bit, but the Ictineo just adds a nice shine to everything.

Sounds amazing with all 3 basses I have as well as when I've put a Les Paul gu**ar through it (5th gear is also pretty phenomenal for gu**ar).

On my Incognito P-bass (Carvin LB50 with EMG HB pickups) the Ictaneo really helps me razor in the mid scoop and trim the highs to get the era needed for the track, the booty is always righteous and the punch glorious.
The Ictineo sounds great on just about everything all my basses do improve in some way but also so do my guitars and some of my vintage keyboards. I will also occasionally use the Ictaneo or Submarine as a plug in problem solver when mixing to tame or sweeten a problem or lackluster track.

There is A LOT more exploring I need to do but so far I really like the "Clean SVT" setting with my EBMM SR5HH Special set to just the rear pickup. Really fattens it up!

Just got me an Ictineo a couple of days ago, WOW it lives up to the hype and then some.
No hiss here
I'm running it last in the chain - Jazz bass - Diamond BC JR - IE Oxide - Terraformer - Ictineo - GK MB112 + MBP112
Never thought depth and toanz like this would be possible with a little combo stack.
Love the way it puts a smooth shine on every note.
I was waiting for a Messenger but got impatient and got Ictineo instead, and I don't regret that one bit.
Messenger might have missed the boat for a while me thinks, only have limited space left on the board and none of the above are going anywhere

I've got an Ictineo on the way! I've seen it on boards around here for a long time, and I'm excited to finally get my hands on one after snagging a great deal online. I'll be sure to report back. After the one video I've listened to online, I expect very, very great things to come out of this little box.

. . . I also picked up a Radial DI box since I needed a DI out for my board, and I was replacing my VT bass DI. The combination of the Ictineo with a dedicated DI box works perfectly, and I think that's 99% due to the Ictineo. It's a great tone shaping pedal that is super clean and just makes your bass sound better.

At the risk of causing a rift in the space-time continuum by replying to a 2yr+ old comment, I thought I would ask . . . I have an Ictineo arriving today. I also am currently using a VTBassDI as my primary preamp/DI at the moment for my ampless pedalboard, playing mostly in churches, modern worship. I was planning to keep the VTDI and just use it bypassed as a dedicated direct box, but it would still give me the option of kicking it on once in a while for boost, or additional EQ shaping for certain parts of songs or whatever. But I primarily need the VTDI for it's speaker sim capabilities when I use dirt pedals in my ampless setup. But once I get the Ictineo, will I find I no longer need the speaker simming capabilities of the VTBass to run direct with dirt? Are you now, two years later . . . lol . . . still happy with that decision to get rid of the VTDI? I am constantly flipping pedals, and every once in a while there is one that 6-9 months down the road I regret selling because now I have something that I feel like would go great with it.

Disclaimer: Thus far, I have only used it in my "ampless" pedalboard into a Rolls PM50 setup. I'll get a chance to use an actual amp and play with it live on Sunday. That being said . . .

By the beard of Zeus! This thing is unreal! It's a game changer for me, for sure. Probably the most "professional" sounding/functioning pedal I've ever owned, and one that will make a significant difference in my tone for the better. I say professional, because to echo what someone said earlier in the thread, or maybe in "JustNick's" demo video, you can't really get a bad tone out of it. Tweaking everything, even to the extremes, just yields different varieties of awesomeness. And to echo what someone else said, I have a hard time deciding which sound I like best. I'll flip a switch and turn a knob and be like, "Ooh! That's it!" And then I'll make a couple of more changes and be like, "Ooh! No, THAT'S it!" Etc, etc. It's all good. And then I engaged the boost, and darn near crapped my britches. So fantastic. I finally have that power behind each note I've been looking for, but it's not muddy and flubby like the Tech21 VTBass can sometimes sound. And to answer my own earlier question, I do not miss the cab simming capabilities of the VTBass at all when using overdrive. The VTBassDI is now relegated to glorified, bypassed DI status. I also recently picked up a DSM Subatomic. The combination of that, my also-recently-acquired Saffron Squeeze into the Ictineo is pure tonal bliss. Grindy heaven, or disengage the Sub-Atomic and it's powerful, pristine tone. The sample settings for the Ictineo are a great place to start. Particularly the "sweet fingers," and dial it in from there. I can't wait to use it live on Sunday and blow everyone out of their seats.
