Not only have Flames fans missed playoff hockey for the last 6 years, but even more, they've missed an intense rivalry with a divisional opponent since the Oilers faded into relative obscurity that started with the Gretzky trade and ended as both teams skated into disappointing mediocrity from the magic and heat that a Flames/Oilers game - regular or post season would bring. It appears that has changed now. Apart from the fact that the 2 teams aren't from the same province, only 200 miles away from each other, there are similarities. Flames fans were disheartened and fed up with the dominance that the Oilers had over our team as they continued to win game after game with a far superior team. With the arrival of Bob Johnson (R.I.P.) and his superior coaching skills, attitude ("it's a great day for hockey!"), and connections with U.S. collegians, the Flames slowly turned the corner, and eventually started playing the Oilers on more even terms. The year before they won the cup in '89 they eliminated the Oilers in an intense, close 7 game series (Flames won it 1-0 when Steve Smith scored into his own net on his birthday no less) that meant more to Flames fans then winning the cup ever could - the next series that they lost was pretty much anticlimactic as it could never match the intensity of the previous one. The Canucks have dominated us for years now meting out defeats with the same boring regularity that the Oilers used to do pre Mullen, Otto, Loob, Macinnis, MacDonald, etc. as the Canucks did pre Gaudreau, Monahan, Wideman, Hudler, etc. That's all changed now. There's real hate building between these 2 teams, and with the faithful in Cowtown now. Series on!
