I got my Joyo JF-01 Vintage Overdrive to replace my 20year-old DIY tube-screamer which died on me. What a superb pedal with both bass and guitar! Just a touch of 'hair' for a bass and it brings the sound to life. Fantastic overdrive on guitar too. I've got a DIY EHX LPB-1 linear boost before it and it's very responsive to that. You can't source the parts and build your own for the price of the Joyo - crazy!

I really want to fatten my clean tone and sprinkle some grit around the edges.
Do they come with a manual with suggestions like sansamps?

American is a Fender amp emulation while California emulates Mesa. Not sure about the instructions, I haven't got one yet - cannot decide between American and British, and this time of the year is not a spending time, so no option of getting both to try.
American = Fender Blonde
AC Tone = Vox
British = Marshall
California = Mesa
AC Tone = Vox

I had a cali. I have an american as well. I never did play them together though. How would you use them? The one issue I had was the Joyo preamps didn't play very well with other preamps. It's almost like it didn't deal with a lot of prominent frequencies in the chain. But I EQ pretty aggressively. So it could be me. Worth a shot.
They're really the same thing. They are just voiced differently. The overdrive voice is a tad different too. It just sounds a little different. I'm not sure how close it gets to a Mesa though. It's kinda hard to put Mesa sound in a $40 pedal. It's still pretty nice though. I honestly can't remember what the biggest differences tonally between the two. They do sound different though. I do agree with you though, not nearly enough bass demos for them.
I have a soundcloud that I did some american demos on. I don't think I did any of the cali.
It's not the greatest demo. But you get the tone anyway. I did do a cali!
It's been awhile since I have posted here but I have the UD and now I am thinking of getting the Californian or the American, but I own a Mesa head with an overdrive channel that I rarely use. I am thinking the Californian may offer a more musical tone than the triple rectifier inspired channel of my Mesa. I may grab it and blend it with the Mesa gain for heavy dirt when I get around to it. My other head is an Ampeg SVTII and to me, the American Fender inspired tone wouldn't match well with the Ampeg tone, but I may be wrong.
After many tries I decided to use my american as an overdrive that I send to my vt bass set on a low gain value.
The 2 combined sound very nice, so I guess that the american combined to a SVT head should work well too.

How would you compare the overdriven sounds of the VT and the American set to low/mid gain? I know the VT quite well, would the American be more or less fizzy, creamy, crunchy etc? Finer or coarser texture of grit?
