Lately I am on a 5 String Quest. I tried to find a 55-94 and finally realized that I prefer a 34" scale! After all these years I guess my little aches have caught up with me. It is a shame because I think the Lakland neck is THE neck for me!

Tom,

+1000 on what you're saying and I (literally) feel your pain. I'm limited to the 34" scale for various physical reasons and I think by now I've played nearly every single 34" 5-string there is, trying to find one I like as much as my 54-94.

Nobody's got anything to compare with what Dan & company have wrought. I haven't tried the Cort GB-75, though, and there are some who say that it's probably as close to a 34" 5-string Lakie as we're gonna get. Admittedly it can't aspire to be anything more than a Skyline, but so what? There's no shame in any Skyline I've ever seen.

Wonder if the wizards of North Dominick could work their magic or pluck their PLEK-er and bring a GB-75 even closer to being Lak-a-licious...

I want the advice of the LOG on this one.

...I want to get my fretless refinished. After seeing Ian's (artiseasy) 70's J in Antigua Burst, I've wanted a bass like that.

...Chances are I'd also have my pickup cover on it as well... what do you all think? I'm definitely getting it refinished and I'm feeling this. Before this, I was thinking Oly White. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Evan,

I'm a big fan of non-traditional colors and finishes, so a big part of me really likes what you've proposed (especially the matching burst pickguard - much classier than a clear one). I think it will look killer. That having been said, however, I keep flashing on a 1970's-era kitchen with Harvest Gold appliances, which is not to say it's a bad thing, especially if you want to tap into that 70's vintage vibe.

Might be the way to go! I've heard a quality refinish costs a pretty penny, maybe $500 +.

From what I've seen in this area you can get a good quality refinish for right around $300. Me, I'd sooner save up a little more and go trolling for Skylines but YMMV...

I'd like to see what a 3T chocolate burst would look like - light chocolate milk at the center bursting to dark chocolate at the edges.

My absolute favorite finish of all time is a trans blueburst Modulus offered (they may still) that looked for all the world like a tropical ocean, especially on a quilted top.

the antigua would have been poly in 1978, so refinishing that way would be cool. i wonder who does that refin?? i guess you'd also have to get a black pickguard and get it painted along with the bass

Pat Wilkins said he'd do the pickguard and bass
He gave me a nice turnaround too. Right now, I'm between Antigua and and autumnglo if I can find someone willing.

Whoo-hoo! Today's the day!

I should be getting my brand spankin' new Skyline JO5 IndoPlek with Chi-Sonics (passive single coils): 3TT with a tort guard, maple fretboard and a bone nut. I've been without a Lakland for a couple of months now and it's been driving me nuts!

Pics to follow this evening...

Awesome! I think that line goes in this order:

"I do!" From wife when getting married
"It's a boy!" or "It's a girl!" children being born.
"Out For Delivery" You are getting a Lakland today.

He he he!
:D

very cool. which bass are you refinning?? i'm sure a white pg would be cool--i saw a really beat antigua p once and it looked like it had worn down to black on the pg. i'm sure pat would know the best way to do it.

Hey, what about fiesta red, and keep the tort guard? A Pino jazz! ;)

Trust me, I've thought about it... and will continue to. I think Fender calls it Fiesta Red over Desert Sand. We'll see.

I actually just got someone asking about the bass through youtube. Who knows? I may sell it to fund something a little different... but, probably not.
