I posted this in the BT500 v TH500 thread also:-

I just tried a JJ12AU7 in the V1 pos of the Orange TB500 & Jim, I think this'd be the trick for you.
Still goes VERY loud & gives a lot more room on the GAIN control prior to overdrive. Sure the volume is a little less overall, but this is a very loud amp.
I tried what few other 12AX7's I had too- I only had 2 MESA branded Russian 12AX7's & 2 OLD Philips ones.
Neither of these made much difference- a slightly smoother OD with the Philips ones.
Tried to get both LOUD & CLEAN with all different tubes & it'll do it fine with all, just, obviously, more room on the GAIN control with the AU7 in there & still goes VERY loud.
Decided to leave the PHILLIPS 12AX7's in there for now

I replaced the stock tubes with the JAN 5751s and it smoothed everything out. I can push the master way up and push the gain, too, and still get plenty out of her without any breakup. The nice bit is to get it right there, and then just dig in--nice, warm overdriven tone... :cool:

Count me in - just picked up a Crush Pix CR50BXT as my practice / jam amp. Can I get a number?

Sounding pretty sweet so far, a lot better than the Ampeg BA110 I briefly owned before returning it due to dodgy QC. Don't know how much that's the larger speaker or how much it's the electronics. Love the design too, both the Orangeness and the knob labelling / icons.

Does anyone know what the BT500 capabilities are with high end treble and aggressive mids? Can it do that, or is it quite scooped?

It's definitely far from scooped, and if you replace the preamp tubes with something better than the stock ones, it really opens the EQ section up. I love the amp because its a low-mid thump that I haven't quite found elsewhere.

Sounds cool! I have the Guitar Dual Terror and its simplicity is stunning. One tone knob for each channel haha!

I don't want ridiculously pingy sparkle, just a nice solid crisp high end...

I'm a bit fan of pushing my mids so that's my main concern after seeing the Bass Gear review.

I would not call the Bass Terror TB500 mid-shy based on my gigging experience. Not at all.

That is what I love about the Orange line. Simplicity. I don't need 15+ knobs and switches to dial in my sound. The first time I walked into our practice studio, unplugged the supplied GK head from the Mesa 1-15 cab and plugged in my TB500, my bandmates were stunned at the tone it provided.

I have two mid 60's vintage NOS smooth plate Telefunken 12AX7's that I want to replace the stock ones with. Not that I need anymore improvement on this great piece of gear but if changing to better tubes gives me more then I'll gladly take it!
