Official Orange Club II

You use the OBC12 with an AD200?
No usually with the Terror 1,000. I used it for home practice or small gigs. I like the 27 lb. weight of the obc12, so I plan to get another.

I’m sure they’re great, and lightweight is always a plus, but since the AD200 head is over 21” wide, it would hang over the sides of the 19” cabinet. I think the 115, although heavy, might be the right thing for me. It’s mostly gonna stay in the studio anyway so heavy isn’t too big a deal. I know it bugs people when stupid aesthetics matter to people, but I’m one of “those” guys where I really dig when the rig looks right. I hate when the head is wider than the cabinet.

As someone new to the Orange Bass head, I can say, after playing it all day, I am really liking it, currently playing through an SVT212AV. Last night I had it plugged into a LDS 115 cabinet that I have that I had made as an extension cab for my BA210v2. Sold the 210 awhile ago, and currently have this 125 listed for sale. I was surprised at how good the AD sounded through the 115, I can only image how good it must sound with the OBC 115.

I’m really looking forward to tomorrow to hear the AD with the band. Main thing I notice is how subtle the Bass/Mid/Treble controls affect the sound. Good thing the initial sound with all tone controls centered seems to be just about right on, a definite excellent starting point.

Glad to hear another SVT212AV fan! I've one for my home rig and it is one sweet cab. Also, I too am "that guy" where I hate if my amp head is wider than the cab.

it is a fender/Marshall/vox (FMV) tone stack, flat is treble at minimum, mids at maximum, and bass at 1 (first little tick).

Wow, that is foreign to my Ampeg sensibilities (12 o’clock on all tone knobs is flat, as far as I am aware). I will have to learn this and keep this flat reference in my mind. Thanks for the info, I had never hear this about this. I am totally loving this head.

So, now I have this!! I’m a longtime Ampeg loyal guy, but I felt I needed more power than the V4B I use for one of my bands, and just didn’t want to go the SVT route. I’m looking forward to tomorrow when I get to use it with the band. It will be running through a sealed, somewhat shallow (14”) old Ampeg B40 4x10 cab that I have which is loaded with Eminence BassLite SC10-16’s, so we’ll see. It’s likely that the ported 212AV it’s sitting on in the picture may end up being the cab I ultimately use.

But, I think, once I can sell some stuff, the OBC115 with be the one to go with. What are some of your thoughts on having a single OBC115 with the AD200, will I be able to go loud and low, but still get good definition? I’m pretty sure I do not want the 410, mostly because it’s just too heavy, plus I’m leaning towards ported cabinets these days.

The 115 is loud, it might lack some definition and low end that you get with the 410, but it is a great and very capable cab. It works for most stuff, great colour.

What are the thoughts on the OBC212, isobaric cabs? I know they are discontinued, which I believe usually indicates they weren’t very popular.

They sound tight, but are heavy and perceived loudness is not that far from a 112. They were also dearer.

i don't like the isoberic cabs, had the combo and 212. I also don't like the OBC410, found it too scooped and just way too heavy and large size. i prefer the OBC112 and OBC115.

I’m pretty sure the OBC115 will be what I get, but it’s going to be awhile. Need to sell a ‘72 V4B, and ‘70’s Ampeg B40 4x10 cab, and a ‘64 Fender super reverb. Luckily I have a good sounding cab for the AD200 at the moment in the 212AV.

I’ll be running the head through the B40 tonight and I’m hoping I’m pleasantly surprised that the Orange will get out of that cab what the V4B can’t seem to get in the room it’s in. I know that B40 works good with an SVT, so my guess is that cabinet just likes more power shoved into it. But, if not, then the 212AV goes to the rehearsal space and the 115 (when I finally get one) goes to gigs.

Played my new (to me) AD200 all weekend in my garage and really love it. Tonight’s rehearsal can’t come fast enough.

Used to AD200 tonight with the band. Wow, tons of low end through the sealed 4x10 I was using. Ended up with the bass all the way down to like 1, mid at 9 treble at 9. Still need a little more mids, so maybe a pedal eq will be in order. We are tuned low, and pretty loud in a small room, so there’s that. Just want a little more clarity on the higher notes. Next week I’m gonna try the 212AV. Given what I heard tonight, I’m hoping if I do get a 115, I get the chance to try before I buy. Really nice low end, not muddy, but overpowering the other frequencies to my ear, even with the bass all the way down. A bit of adjustment for a longtime Ampeg guy.

I remember as a long time Orange user going into an SVT for the first time. I hated the almost Hi-Fi quality, everybody could hear my mistakes! XD

I've only found the AD200B EQ to be lacking in a room with really bad acoustics. Most other times it's got plenty of mids and highs for me.

That could be the case, it’s a small cluttered room, amps pointing in all directions, guitars tuned to D Standard and drop C, and everything pretty loud. It sounds really good on its own, but when played with the band playing, I can’t quite hear as loud as I’m used to, what I think I’d call the low-mid to mid. The shallow, only 14” deep sealed 4x10 could also be a problem. It will be interesting to see if the ported 2x12 somehow makes up the difference.

Sometimes what has worked for me, in poor rooms, is to back the cab close to a wall and possibly a corner. Might get boom'yer but could help cutting through. If just too boom'y, slightly pull the cab off the floor a few inches (such as caster height or stand it up on four rolls of duct/gaffers tape like feet) and the decoupling will tighten it up. Basically you are just MacGyver'n the room dynamics for the bass. Do the tape roll feet on stages that get unruly and boom'y as well.

Currently I run my AD200B with a single OBC115 but I've also had it will two OBC410's, two OBC115's and combo OBC410/OBC115. Non-Orange cabs that I ran with the AD200B were Berg NV412, Berg NXV212, Genzler 212T, two GK212 Neo II and GK412 II. Favorite out of the bunch were two OBC115 (or a single OBC115) and the Berg NV412. The GK cabs close behind the NV412. Loudest/punchiest were the NV412 and two GK212 cabs.

All this said, I think a single OBC115 does a lot of lifting for a single 15. The OBC115's have some mojo about them that I personally dig and gravitate towards but it's not what I would call a hifi cab. It worked in a loud American Hard Rock/Punk'ish power trio but barely as a single. Typically I ran it with two OBC115 or the OBC410/OBC115 combo but hauling that around was a pain. My suggestion would be to get one OBC115 and see if that works. If you feel that you desire a little more oomph, get another OBC115. If you think the OBC115 lacks mid clarity or punch, I would say check out the OBC112, GK212 or Berg NXV212. Maybe a Darkglass NG212N but I haven't tried one. I've talked to a couple of people that described it having some similar mid bump out of the OBC112 and Berg NXV212. The GK212 II works well with the AD200B and is a good balance on value.

I also have a Terror 500 MKii and OBC112. The OBC112 is impressive in it's own right but I haven't tried it with the AD200B. OBC112 is more mid forward and punchier than the OBC115 but not as tonally wide as the OBC115. For grins I'm thinking about getting a 2nd OBC112 because they are super portable and I'm curious how it would do with the AD200B. I think they are a little overpriced but it's a decent cabinet. Don't hesitate to try one out.

Ultimately if you are really digging what you get out of the AD200B, you will find it works quiet well with many different cabs. I would assume it sounds great through the SVT212AV.

Thanks for all this! So far my only complaint(?) is that, when playing loud with the full band, the riffs here and there don’t stand out, and I’m thinking (hoping) it’s the B40 cab. Next week the 212av gets a run. But, from what you just written, I am (unbelievably) thinking a OBC115 will give me what I want.

No problem. Another rig I really enjoyed (nearly as much if not the same as the AD200B/OBC115) was the V4B and SVT212AV. I had two SVT212AV but was happy running one SVT212AV. The SVT212AV is an excellent cabinet as it reminds me what you get out of 12's but also some of that mojo magic I feel about the OBC115. Different beasts but equally pleasing. I haven't done a direct A/B comparison on the OBC115 vs SVT212AV but the SVT212AV will be puncher and louder. Truthfully the the AD200B + SVT212AV match sounds, in theory to me, like a great match. If Orange decided to make an England or USA 2x12 bass cabinet, I would be all over it as long as it wasn't overly mid-forward and leaned more towards a vintage'y approach like the OBC115 and vibes out of the SVT212AV.
