Do you have an example of what you mean? The early pickups were pretty consistent sounding, including the "drop-shoulder" 4 and 5-string pickups and the evenly curved 6-string pickups. (No lettering.) The later pickups with Bartolini lettering sounded a little different, less fat and more crisp. I think they were standard Bartolini RT pickups supplied by Gibson. Could be other models, of course, this is just what I've owned!

I meant if the pickups were the same all the way around. Did he always use the same pickups or did he change them at some point?

He changed them at some point. Early pups were radiused with drop shoulders. Eventually he changed to radiused without drop shoulders. All Bartolini.

Actually, same pickups. Different plastic casing late in the game around the Gibson buyout. That's per Bob MacDonald who worked with Mike (and from whom I purchased two pre-Gibson basses).

The Tobias Growler with the 'switches' is certainly different to the Tobias Growler with 'knobs'

Whilst Mr Tobias didn't make either which may make my answer pointless

Come to find out, my Tobias doesn't have the drop shoulder style pickups. It did come with the WTMB preamp, but to my dismay, it didn't come with the drop shoulder pickups. Now the challenge is trying to find a set of drop shoulder pickups.

Not a Tobias owner (yet?) but I have a question you maybe know the answer to.
I'm in the process of selling off an electric guitar and someone offered me a Toby pro 5 as a trade and claims it should be equal value. Serial says it's a 2004 Korean model.

With the guitar I'm selling 800 is what I'd be looking for if sold for cash.

I tried to research it and I'm still not sure if it would be a trade of equal value (provided I like it and don't find anything wrong).

Someone today *might* be able to sell a Toby Pro 5 for $800, but I'd say $400-600 is a more realistic price range.

That won't be easy and they might just sound the same! Only 1 of my 3 Pre-Gibs has the drop-shoulder pickups, the other two have normal casings...
