I wonder if one could order directly from Tune Japan. I know retailers like Ishibashi and Ikebe are doing international orders, so I guess if one wants to buy a Japanese Tune (I know I do!) one can go through them. Maybe it's something to do with the dealer network here that's causing them to be sold by Japanese dealers only?

I also thought that license went away; my Korean Tune was sold through Sam Ash (at least I assume it was since they had the license to sell them) but I bought it used and Sam Ash does not carry them anymore. The only dealer I know of at least on Reverb is Canadian and that $2400 bass doesn't seem to be sold by a dealer but rather was brought in used.

Looks like a Korean bass. The serial number is cropped off in the photograph; on both Korean and Japanese TW style basses it's at the very top of the headstock. Japanese s/ns are stamped into the wood, whilst Korean ones are printed.

For reference this is the back of the headstock on my Korean TWX:

When I put it under a light I could see that there was a number at one time, but it has been removed.... The plot thickens. That said, LOVE the Bass and got it cheap cause no one knew what it was. (It didn't say Fender on it......)

Now that is odd. I'm still thinking it's Korean since there's no stamping. Other place I would look is around the control cavity. But that's odd that the s/n isn't there either in its usual place or at all.

Regardless, it's a great bass; enjoy it!

Thanks, It is a great bass. Got it a few years ago, loved it so much that I sought and purchased the fretless version too.
Just stumbled onto this thread yesterday, so I thought I'd post and see if anyone had insight into my autograph mystery... but you opened up another mystery.

yes, once it was pointed out, I can see where a serial number once was, but has since been removed. It definitely started with a "S". More what I'm trying to determine is who signed it, and why.
Beginning to wonder if it was some sort of factory promotional unit, serial number removed and autographed.
Who knows.
Great bass though.

Unfortunately,a removed serial number could mean a stolen instrument.

Here's a two fold question....
How well does anyone think it would sound, or has anyone tried, to convert the stock pickups to passive and ditch the factory active preamp....
question 2)....how well will an Aguilar preamp fit in the control cavity and how hard would it be to hook the factory pickups to it?
I could do the passive pickup thing no problem with standard jazz wiring, I'm just toying with some options....

Yeah...I saw the posts you made but yours is Japanese (i think) and mine is Korean and I think the stock pickups are different sized. Gebass told me what pickups would work for the odd size slim soapbars that are stock in mine and I'm just trying to come up with options I can do myself if possible. I know you mentioned Mike Lull did your pickup swap and looks like those are the standard size soabars. If I do soapbars pickup change I'm gonna have to route the body unless I go with Delano's...which are pretty expensive, or Bart's which are a bit smaller. I was just curious if anyone ran stock Korean TUNE pups passive and how it might sound. I have always preferred passive instruments and the passive EMG soapbars I had in my Dean Edge 6 were some of the best sounding pups I ever heard in the 20 basses I've owned over the last 30years...including my pre Gibson Tobias and the 2 Music Man's I've had. What I'm not sure of is if its the preamp or the pups or the combination of both I'm having issue with.
Because it sure as hell ain't he feel and action! That feels boutique all day. I'm not wanting to spend a fortune but if I must so be it. I'm curious about an Aguilar because the response from Dave on another post about speaker grill covers spoke volumes about customer service and I hope quality so if it's not ridiculous expensive thinking about an Aguilar preamp if it will fit, but I don't know how much that helps if the tone issue is the pups.

Well for one thing.Most pickups are passive.
Unless the pickups have a separate battery powering them.

So, I have the opportunity to get a japanese made TUNE (6-digit serial number without letters) bass for 360€ here, original pickups and electronics. It's purple, I think the model would be a TRB-43? My first decent 4-string, basically. Is that an instant buy at that price?
