Parliament Filter Funk! - Which Filter?

Hey Everyone!

I've been planning out a new small(er) pedalboard setup and I'm looking for a somewhat compact envelope filter that can get me that Bootsy filter tone. I have a 90's Q-tron that I love the tone of but it's way too big to fit on my board. Are there any Boss sized pedals that don't compromise on the funk?

My first thoughts are a 3Leaf Proton or maybe the Aguilar Filter Twin. Am I missing anything? All suggestions welcome!

Honestly this sounds exactly like an MXR BEF. I know it isnt one but it really does sound like one.

I will also agree that for the extra Dough the C4 is definitely worth it if you want or need the extras it offers and it is short bucks for what you get. Everything in the Spectrum is in the C4 but everything in the C4 is not in the Spectrum. I have both.
That's good info. I didn't know the C4 had all the same stuff as the Spectrum. Seems like a strange choice to make the Spectrum at all in that case.

@bassbrad @Nighttrain1127 et. al. how do you compare the SA Spectrum to the SA Manta?
I'm a happy Manta user.
I have no hands on with the Spectrum or the Manta, but have been a fiend for filters since the seventies and have tried and owned many. The C4 is giving me tools in one box that I have only ever dreamed about and the tracking is spectacular. Perfection, no but very close especially for the price the SA crew have done an amazing job.

I have tried a lot of them, had the Proton, the MuTron, Q, and Mr Black Fwonkbeta (which I loved)... also many of the old standards... nothing was as “wet” and responsive as the MXR BEF for me though. Priced great, and combined with the Octamizer and Pork/Pickle Fuzz, I get this tone (2nd break) and everything in between.

Pls let us know what you end up with, we all have our favorites, reasons, budget and the one that works best with our style and feel :)

Mu-Tron Micro-Tron III is the closest thing around to a vintage Musitronics Mu-Tron III which Bootsy used on those old Parliament records. MXR BEF is nice but it's band pass and so has a thinner sound, (although the blend option works well). Those old Q-Trons are pretty great too. From what I've heard of the C4 and Spectrum is that they can emulate many filters, Mu-Tron and Lovetone Meatball included. I'm yet to hear a sound clip yet that sounds 100% like the slightly dirty quack and gurgle that is a Mu-Tron though. I'd love to be proved wrong though!

Mutron Microtron III without question. Everything else is a pale imitation

Is there ever anything that is not the original that sounds 100% like the original? Highly doubtful you may hear it that way because you choose to but my guess would be that on a spectrum analyzer it would be different in some way. The Source Audio C4 and Spectrum are so close to the originals on some presets it makes no real difference. To some that believe they can hear all the nuances and find them not to be to their liking that is a personal choice . But to my ear and having had many filters before they sound how I want them to sound.

If you want a Mutron, buy a Mutron. Done.
