Mine is a fairly bright sounding bass, so I'm not surprised to hear it's maple. Still sounds good though.

Here is my 5ver. I got it for $100
It is a later version with the soap bars and poplar body and maple fretboard. Also has 4 screws on the control plate.
IMO, it has a very nice warm tone.

I bought a Foundation in the early '90s (black/maple) and it was my favorite neck for quite a while. I later traded it for something that I don't remember at all.

Today I took my son to GC so he could try out some guitars and I went to the bass room and stumbled upon (literally, I almost tripped over it in the floorstand) a '87 Foundation in white with matching headstock and rosewood fingerboard. I gave it a whirl through their SVT and it has that old familiar feel to the neck and butt-kickin' SuperFerrite tone. It must've liked me too 'cause it followed me home.

Thanks, I didn't weigh them with a scale but my guesstimate based on "hand weighing" is that the 4 Hipshots U/Ls weigh about as much as two OEM tuners, maybe a hair less. However my Hipshots are modified with aluminum string posts I DIY'd so they weigh somewhat less than stock ultralights.

I know the tuners on my Foundation are those big heavy thick ones and they've got to weigh half a pound each. That's why I wondered if it was worth changing them out.

Obviously I thought it was worth it but I think I may even go to my new favorite lightweight tuners the Gotoh Res-O-Lite 350. 4 of the 350s weigh about as much as 3 OEM Hipshot ULs and even a bit less than my 4 modded U/Ls.

Oh really? I'll check those out too. :) I wasn't questioning whether it was worth it for you to change them out, but for me. Sorry if there was some confusion.

And out came the blackest peavey foundation ever. So to take this to the Fender extreme, we are dealing with. black body, rosewood neck, matching black headstock w/white pinstripe, black speed knobs, 5 hole rear coverplate, Superferrites ( or I wouldn't of even bothered), big barrel bridge, the smaller, butterfly shaped tuners. I know, no pics, no bass?

My son asked me to record a bass track to accompany his multi-tracked guitar parts for his guitar lesson so I grabbed the Foundation and I'm stunned how good it sounds recorded. Just straight into the interface and computer with no EQ using just the neck pickup and Labella tapes.

Here's mine. It's a 95 according to wikipedia. Plays as well or better than my MIA Jazz.

I do have one issue with it. When both volumes are maxed out, it sounds very thin, like the pickups are out of phase or something. Both pickups sound great soloed. Anyone else experience this?

Nice bass!

These are single coil pickups. Just as on a J-Bass, they will pick up noise, unless they are set at the same volume, in which case they will cancel some of the noise out, as they are counter-wound.

Like you I tend to like them at a different volume, which allows to pick more of the higher pitch sound. Especially good with brand new strings.

Thanks. I am enjoying it greatly. I even contemplated selling my Jazz bass, but I don't think I will. The more the merrier.

It's not single coil hum I'm hearing, but as you bring one pickup or the other up in volume with the other maxed out there's a certain point turned up to about "8" where the bottom falls out. I guess I'll just chalk it up to the difference in output level between the pickups. :hmm:

Mine does that too, even after I rewired it. I think it's the nature of the beast or something. I just keep my volume at about 7 most of the time.
