I almost got a trade for a Peavey Fury VI for a nearm int 1980 T-40. Guy hasn't responded yet...fingers crossed.

I can't believe I just scored a never played before T-40 from 1979!
It's spotless, and with the protective film still over the pickguard!
The bummer is, I have to peal it off.

Thanks! It's not only rosewood, but the burst is actually Sienna (not 3TS). The story is in the referenced thread, but basically, I bought a natural brand new in '79, when I was 13. I sold it a year later and have been looking back since. I'd been looking at them on eBay, but when I found this one - locally - I had to pull the trigger. I still can't believe it's mine.
I've heard T-40s referred to as some of the most versatile tone machines ever. Ric, Precision, Jazz. I dunno if it's the tone circuit, the phase switch, the weight, or what. The thing sounds even better than it looks!
OK, I'm back with pics, remember this is a never been played-new old stock bass I just scored from an eBay pawn shop in MD, $266.
These are some pics I just took (1/21/2010). Just enough to show how spotless it is, these are taken with the bass right out of the carton. Note the absence of dust, fret wear, or yellowing, and the protective film still on the pickguard. Amazing!

Unreal...that looks like a brand new bass! The grain is incredible.
Do what you like, but if it were me, that pickguard comes off and is set aside. It prolly won't stay that pristine forever, but you can always put it back on later. That's the same case my new one came in back in '79!

Yup, I'd say yank the original pg and leave in the case, and put on a replacement.
That case is the same as the one my T-40 has-- only in WAY better shape, haha.
Yes, it would have been better if some collectors had bid the price up and out of my range. I'm a user not a collector, it would have been better for me if I had found a bass in good shape but with a little wear. Now I have a pristine relic on my hands. It's all downhill from here.

I thought it would have gone into the $400+ range in that condition. I bought mine here at TB a few years ago for $300 shipped and thought that that was a good price for a better-than-average condition T-40. I guess there are no hard-core T-40 collectors, but it is good to see plenty of T-40 players.
$266 for a mint condition T-40? Wow, you're eligible for the snag-of-the-year award. But I see your dilemma.
That is awesome. It sure does look like the plastic has been off before though.
As for the case, I'm curious as to why you would have gotten a case like that in 79. I got mine in 78 (It hadn't been released long when we went to the store) and it came with the molded rectangular Peavey tagged case. Did resellers offer some kind of generic/3rd party to have a lower cost option?
I'm keen to know this as well, as I have a T-40 with the same box case with the padded ends and fuzzy greenish-brown interior.
Btw, if anyone thinks a T-40 is heavy in a molded plastic case... Try lugging one in one of the wooden ones. Holy cow.

Sure, I suppose that's possible, but it looks more like speculation than actual resolution.
The thing that causes me doubt about that theory is that if it was the "official case" sold by Peavey between two other case models, why wouldn't they have done something to brand it...just get two rivets and a Peavey logo? They did it with everything else.
How many of you guys have seen black and rosewood T-40s? I have been told it's a rare combination. Do you think that would make the value go up at all?
