Pete Wentz plays what bass?

Every era needs to have a bassist they hate.
Early 90's: Duff McKagan
Mid 90's: Fieldy
Late 90's into Early 2000's: Mark Hoppus
Mid 2000's into Late 2000's: Pete Wentz

The big question is: Who's going to be the next bassist everyone hates?

FWIW: I'm 26, a civil engineer, a session musician and I enjoy Fallout Boy and other similar artists. I can listen to them or Tower of Power, In Flames, Count Basie, Atmosphere, etc. and appreciate all of them despite how different the genres and generational gaps are. Don't let the music you're supposed to be listening to based on your age, your career, your social circles, etc. dictate what you like, and additionally don't waste your time hating on other people's preferences... Although... The internet makes that an impossibility it seems.

Oh! Who can say they don't enjoy FOB's cover of "Beat It"? :p

fact: he actually does play his squier. modded slightly but it is the squier. he does also have two fenders, similar in style but one with LEDs and one with an air jordan logo.

i dont get why people hate him so much. he is NOT a good bassist by any means.
dont like him, dont care. he doesnt deserve such a bad rap.

QED.

I was expecting this to be a short argument about whether he still uses his Fenders or has switched to his Squiers, but damn that led to some tangents.

Am I the only one who thinks it's funny that he uses a Squier as his main bass and a Fender as a backup?

I don't think anyone is flat-out saying they hate this guy, or FOB in general.. However, many of us can't help but associate this band with bouts of nausea. :smug:

I firmly believe that Fallout Boy could even give Helen Keller the dry heaves. :hiding:

duff? you think so? i personally don't think duff is that bad of a bass player, even with his lack of practice.i mean,he's no chris squire, but you get it.

Hahaha! That's classic...

I don't really listen to the radio but that cat wears too much guyliner for me to take seriously as a musician. But I play good music and let that speak for itself. I'm not into flashy basses with LED's and dressing up for a show... (unless its a jazz gig :smug:)

You missed my point. its not that Duff is bad, its just that he was the guy that everybody hated on back in the early 90's. At least that's the consensus that I've ready on talkbass as I wasn't playing bass in the early 90's.

I think Duff is a very talented bassist and I really like his style.

+1.

As far as FOB and Pete Wentz go, signature basses are always a product of both skill and popularity, and where one's lacking the other usually fills the gap. I haven't listened to much of FOB, so I'm not sure about the ratio here.

Still, his sig bass might get a lot of kids hyped up to give the instrument a shot - and that's always good for the resellers.

Well, Mike, your comment was ageist which was what I was getting at. And I don't feel like continuing this ridiculousness, so think what you want.

Thank you.

This thread (and this site in general) is meant to be a place where bass players and musicians of all sorts can come and discuss, debate, and decide upon various topics of which music, not age, is the primary subject.

If someone has to bring age into this, then they're clearly missing the point of this whole thread and topic.

But, just because we ARE talking about age here, I would like to point out that Mozart wrote quite a few great pieces of music before he was my age (19) that I wont be able to write now, maybe ever. Should his music be discredited because he was much younger than other composers?

Just Sayin'

But on the topic of Pete Wentz......

I don't particularly enjoy FOB or his style of playing or music, but I can appreciate that he (and the band from what I've read and seen and heard) is a nice and decent guy.

Oh, for Pete's sake (intentional). Context, people. Context is everything. The ability of individuals to pull what they want out of a statement to fit their particular form of insecurity is always amazing, if not entertaining.

The offending remark that I made that people seem to bleed into the others is that a sophmore in college is still a kid. Write your congressman!! At best the guy's 20. Still a kid. I thought that when I was 20. I thought it when I was 22. I thought it when I finished school, and I think it now, at 34.

I'd considered apologizing for it, but then thought the onus is on those offended to grow up (again, intentional) and accept that, mathmatically, they simply aren't as old as people who were born before them. I didn't make a character judgement on anyone other than those who fit the if/then statement I used above. Don't fit into that box? Well stop trying to say I put you there. The overreaction to my comment does a great deal of damage to the point you guys think you're arguing.

The Mozart example is great. In (roughly) 234 years we haven't had another....making the example less great and more like an extreme exception.

Mike

If you want to talk about Pete Wentz, do it down in the Bassists forum.

If you want to keep to the topic of the bass itself, do that in this thread.

This is getting just like the Mark Hoppus and Fieldy signature bass threads.:hmm:

the bass isnt bad. logo's are a little much, since theres no way out of being pegged as a FOB fan if you buy it.

the ones in the live pictures are likely various prototypes as WELL as the squier.

for the record.. he's had some good basslines before.. he just chooses to not showcase his mediocrity any more. listen to "dead on arrival". pretty decent.
