I enjoy a good four cheese pizza once in a while, but I have to be in the mood for it. I prefer toppings like pepperoni, sausage and onion. BBQ chicken is probably my favorite non-traditional pizza.

plain cheese pizza

You never know what might taste good. For example, I have never liked Pizza Hut's hand-tossed crust. It's too sweet or something. But.... I went to a party where they ordered several with the same three toppings: beef, onion, green pepper. I loved it. I couldn't get enough.
Actually, it’s the toppings that are for people who don’t know where to order good pizza from. They mask the poor quality with an extra layer of something else poor quality, but it’s a different color so people go “Ooh, how exotic!” when it’s really just a faster delivery system for diarrhea. When someone scoffs at cheese pizza, it’s because they’ve never had real pizza.

First litmus test is if it’s good plain.
Next item of concern is whether they use fresh mushrooms or those soggy rubbery discs of misery.
I judge harshly on item number two above.
They are the type people that get fired from the carnival because they aren't moral enough to operate the games of chance.
Because of this thread, I went out for dinner tonight and had me a cheese pizza from one of the OK joints here in town. I saved a few pieces for breakfast tomorrow too.
The wife is burned out on pizza, so I had to compromise and pick a place that has a nice collection of salads that are more than just iceberg lettuce on a plate.
Around here, the best pizza joints are the ones that just make pizza. These other joints, like the one we went to tonight, have fancy salads, pasta, burgers, and other dishes like chicken satay that should never be served in a pizza joint. Since they do, the pizza suffers accordingly.
*Note: I have nothing against those other items, just don't serve them in a pizza joint. Or at least don't call yourself a pizza joint if you're making all that other junk too.

I've had plenty of real pizza, some in Sicily.
The last really good pizza I had was from an Italian shop right near home (menu snippet from earlier), but the best I had prior to that was in Queens.

Plain cheese is is true pizza. Toppings are just for covering up inferior pie. The best I ever had was at DeLorenzo’s on Hudson St in Trenton NJ. They call it tomato pie and even make their crust from scratch. Since moving to the Portland OR area, I struggled for a long time to find anything even decent. I finally found a place in Portland called Apizza Scholls on Hawthorne that is really pretty good. @Passinwind, you should check it out.
Check out Flying Pie. They have two in Portland, and a few others.
I've only been to the one off Boone's Ferry. It's good, real good.

Cool, thanks. I've heard good things about them and SE Hawthorne is easy for me. We have a few decent ones out here. I like Double Mtn. Brewing in Hood River, they do a "Jersey Pie" with capicola, provolone, and red goat horn peppers. And a nice margherita pie as well. On the menu they warn people that it's based on NH style, therefore cooked hard and fast and looks a little burnt...as if they should have to! They have a newer pub in PDX as well, haven't been there yet though.

I'm currently visiting the town I couldn't wait to get away from for the first 30+ years of my life. It took a while for the thrill of all the other new shiny things to wear off in a couple much bigger cities, but one thing this area has going for it is it's home to some of the best (thicker rectangular shape) Sicilian pizza places per block than anywhere else I've ever been. The only question they may ask you is do you want it with or without onions. Is there not fantastic pizza with or without toppings to be found elsewhere? Certainly.
Do I ever order pizza for delivery without toppings? No, I haven't not since I've moved away. But I've eaten Sicilian cheese pizza (with or without onions) at least once every day this week, and that trend will continue until I get thru airport security at the end of the week drool

Dough, sauce, cheese. These are the fundamentals of pizza making. Anytime I go to a pizza place for the first time, I order a cheese pizza. This means that the restaurant can't hide behind other ingredients, and shows off the quality of the basics. If a pizza place can't get a cheese pizza correct, no need to go back.

A good pizza is all about the crust. If you have that, all you need is a little parmigiana cheese and some tomato (authentic). Same way if you have some great fresh baked bread, just dip it in olive oil. Toppings can be great, or a way to compensate for lousy pizza.
Here in Central Jersey where there is a pizza joint in every strip mall, plain cheese pizza is with out a doubt the number one seller. Here's the pizza joints just in the vicinity of Freehold.
And this is nothing, if you cross over the Raritain river into North Jersey. I think the pizza places about double in volume up there!
