POLL: Most irritating/unhelpful/redundant TB replies

I think sometimes people don't want to use the search function because they really just want to talk to other receptive, helpful people in (almost) real-time. TalkBass is all about being part of the TalkBass community. We talk. If someone asks a question or wants to talk about something which you feel has been over-talked here on TalkBass, just let people talk, will you?!! Quit interfering with good healthy conversation. It is obviously the most irritating response on TalkBass. If you don't want to talk about it, just don't. That doesn't mean it is irrelevant or unnecessary. It only means you are irritating.

Yep. Being that this is a message board/online forum community rather than just a Wiki page about bass stuff, there's a certain amount of call/response to be expected...and that response should not be "do a search". That's already in the instructions, we know how tue search button works and sometimes it actualky does. I actually get better results by doing a Google search and seeing if a TB link appears.

By the way, I'm sure we all can take solice in knowing that "I don't use effects/tone is in the fingers" is now a TOS offense.

I feel like this was healthy for all of us, lots of folks had plenty to get off their chests.

that sad part is that some of the guys commenting here are the biggest offenders..... so I don't expect much improvement from those guys. Because I try follow rule #1 I'm passing on calling them out- but it's tempting!

If tone is 100% in the fingers, i should sell my expensive basses, buy cheap basses and use a pick..... Or use TONS of effects.

Always loved the "tone is in the fingers" quote. Yes, it does have some truth to it, but I wanna hear Flea, Geddy and Robert Trujillo play their gigs using a fretless Rob Allen with tapes or shortscale Hofner Beatle basses with foam mutes and 30 year old flats. Hell, I would even let Justin Chancellor use a pick with HIS Hofner!

Mis-using the OP's sincere post as a spotlighted vehicle for one's own self-indulgent humor or self-expression. Perhaps this is the forum-participation equivalent of on-stage noodling without sufficient regard for the audience experience and training/expertise in the tools of the trade.

True and many of us have been guilty of that, but isn't talkbass partly about having fun - not just a tool.

Personally, I think the reason people don't use the search function is because it doesn't work very well (no offense, mods). There was a thread several weeks ago that suggested having a Google search function on the site instead of its own search. That's basically what I do when I'm searching for info here: I query "<question/statement> talkbass" on Google and that, usually, finds what I'm looking for. If I try the search function on the site, I am more apt to find a bunch of one-off posts that kind of relate to my search than to actually find an answer. My two cents.

You want plastic coated flat wounds for sure.
Be sure to boil them once a week to keep the finger grease off.
If you use a pick, be sure to sand your strings at least once a month to maintain structural integrity.

Do a search and ask your wife for more information.

The only replies more useless and irritating than 'do a search' are the ones that suggest running a search on another forum or site. As if it was likely that hadn't occurred to the OP.

This is more from TB past, but I used to visibly shake my head when a poster would ask for recommendations for some good Jazz/Fusion groups and someone would rattle off their favorite technical death metal groups like Cynic, Atheist, or Pestilence.

I agree 1000%! It is supposed to be more than a tool... or full of tools LOL!
I come here to relax and learn, and even if I see questions that have been asked a hundred times, I still look the replies.
I've had a tiny realization, it may be right or wrong: I think some of the extreme reactions into these irritations might be a reflection back on those who are irritated.
Why would you let a question get you so upset? And why have such an extreme negative reaction?
The only time I get upset here is when someone offends me. Now look at me-- getting offended by someone I don't even know! I shouldn't care if they offended me, I would be better to consider the source, as my mom always said.
Just my 2 cents.....
