I voted for the "ask my wife" option. You really don't know how you make yourself and marriage appear if you have to ask for permission to make a grown up decision. And yes, I've been married. You know how your finances are. You know the discussions, plans and promises you made with your mate about your budget. STOP using them as an excuse. I see that in music stores as well. You knew a Ken Smith was out of the question before you picked it up. Then you tell the associate, "well I gotta tawk to my wife and see what see says". That's the same thing as asking a woman can we go out some time and her reply is, "I don't think my boyfriend would like that".

How about something along the lines of:

"You didn't ask a good enough question. We have to know what venue you are playing in, the speakers your guitar player has, the height of your drummers throne, your body mass index, assurance that you aren't using a pick, what band you are listening to right now, and which fender P model you are using to answer your question of 'Where can I get a good deal on strings?'"

I just went to another thread and realized what REALLY irritates the you know what out of me.

When a person answers the OP's question with his/her OPINION, and the writes "PERIOD". ***? I totally understand a person's conviction and love for a particular item or brand name but that statement is so stupid on so many levels I realistically don't have time to type them all. That statement is right up there with the "end of discussion" statement.

I see that a lot of people get annoyed when someone says use the search engine but for a lot of questions you can read hundreds of replies by using the search engine rather than a handful of replies to a new thread.

No reason you can't start a thread after you do a search to allow new people to voice their opinion.

Cant stand the "use the search" response because there are alot of cases where the thread doesnt warrant that response. But I'm sorry as soon as I saw it I had to place my vote for the "I dont use effects" response in the effects forum. I see that as moronic as if I were to go into the DB forum and start responding there with "I'm not a DB player but (ridiculous opinion that has no merit)". There is a reason why I stay away and dont bother those in the DB forum.

I imagine the DB version of that conversation would go:

"What kind of bow do you use for Early Music?"

A: I don't use a bow.

or

"What brand of gut strings do you recommend for slapping?"

A: Sounds barbaric. I only use tungsten steel strings.

I'm really irritated with "It's all in your hands" because It's not, It's more than that.

Second that. Actually i was going to state this one. I think is one of the most overrated and most irritating and frustrating answers yo can get. Its all in your hands! With all due respect with all people who believes in that, to me is the winner.

I'm probably guilty of it myself on a few occasions...but...

Posts where people rave about a particular string and it's sound/tone on THEIR particular bass......

I've bought some of these strings.....and they don't sound anything like what the original poster gushed about....on my bass.

Besides....how can you accurately describe what a string sounds like when there is no soundclip to listen to......just a raving endorsement of how the string has 'good punchy mids and nice bright highs" etc etc etc. ?

The sound that a poster got doesn't mean it's good for everybody else.

The answer to how to get the Jamerson sound is a P Bass with flats. Apparently, it's the answer to a lot of other questions, too.

Not quite. You also have to NEVER change strings

It's not bad when someone asks a question after first searching the forum and finding that there isn't really an answer to his/her specific problem. I get that. It's also something I expect people to do as a courtesy to others. When you enter any forum with a question, it only makes sense to spend a few minutes checking around to see if there's a solution already posted.

But when someone joins a forum, doesn't even think of checking the forum for answers and asks a question which gets addressed often, IMO they have earned a brusque response.

Actually, if you look through the list in the poll, many of the responses which people find irritating result from this exact behavior - failing to look for answers before posting.

Redundancy is not a crime when some numb-nuts newbie insults everyone by refusing to do any homework in the forum and asking a question that has been answered 100 times. The assumption that the noob's time is more important than the time of everyone who is asked to explain something for the umpteenth time is, quite simply, an insult. It deserves nothing better than a brusque directive to search.

Not a very welcoming attitude. I don't teach, but if I did I'd know not to scoff at basic questions just because it's old hat to me. Since people come to TB primarily for info, think of n00bs as new students.
