Hi!

In LA we had Al’s Bar, which was an underground legend. I hadn’t heard of it until my old band booked a gig there 20+ years ago. Walking in on a dead, empty Wednesday you could tell stuff went down there on bigger nights. No gig shots from that one, but I’m glad I can say I played there.

Al's Bar? Wow! Haven't heard of that place in a long time. In the mid-80s I was in an original project that played there. The place was so tiny that for our muli-band bill, all the musicians had to wait outside until it was their turn to take the stage. Seems the place held 49 people and the Fire Marshall held them to it.

Am I remembering the place properly? Is it still around?

It was a crazy little spot. They closed the doors years ago. I remember it being two rooms; the bar with a pool table, and the stage. There was definitely no load-in or green room.

Man, to have seen this show.

Saw Nirvana at The Catalyst in Santa Cruz For $1. 3 band bill. Was also working at Real Guitars when Cobain came in and bought a left handed Mosrite.

Man, looking at the photos on this thread is very cool. Some of the members here are playing some fantastic gigs on big stages. No wonder I question if our gig reports are even worth it. I read someone else on here say they were the "ham and eggs" in the gig world....that makes us the "spam."

Someone has to be small time I guess.

First gig after lockdown, Springfield. That was fun, we were so sick of being pent up!

Well shoot, I didn't know we lost Billy Joe. Great singer and songwriter. Gets a lot of airplay out here in Santa Cruz CA on KPIG.

He's with Brenda and Eddy now. He was the working man's songwriter. Simple and meaningful. He worked hard, partied hard, was screwed over big time by Bobby Bare and eventually brought to the forefront by Waylon Jennings and by his rediscovery of Jesus Christ. I've met many and played with a few famous musicians in my life. But one of my greatest disappointments is missing the chance to shake hands with Billy Joe.

It‘s from a german luthier called Franz Bassguitars. I had it hand painted, they don‘t usually come like this.

I've been fortunate to be able to play in front of some big crowds with some awesome bands. My favorite "gig" memories all come from my time playing punk rock as a teenager, in the 90's, before cameras were in everyone's pockets, and not a lot of those gigs were well documented. I played a lot of shows at a local place called the Fireside Bowl. This place is legendary in the minds of many Chicagoans. Like a smaller, more underground CBGB's or something. Anyhow, these pics are from a gig I did there as a teenager. Included was a flyer from that same time. Some notable names on the flyer:

Dillinger Four
Alkaline Trio
Race Traitor (Pete Wentz's first band)
The Melvins

I saw Hot Water Music there in front of 20 people, Texas is the Reason, Promise Ring, Rise Against (and all the bands that were better than Rise Against that eventually turned into Rise Against!)

A mecca for punk and hardcore shows.

My favorite personal performance event here would have been in 1997, playing in one of the two final Los Crudos shows (before the broke up and eventually got back together). Probably 800-1000 people filling a gnarly old bowling alley, spilling into the lanes and such. Had the luxury of doing that at 15.
