Down and dirty basement studio here. I mostly just mix down there but sometimes track solo stuff.
I used to mix entirely in the box. Now I mix through a 1982 StudioMaster deck. I just can't get the same sound mixing digitally.I've got two SM mixers from the same era and I love them. The smaller one if used for monitor routing.
Monitoring is a pair of old Behringer Truth B2031a monitors, a newer pair of Yamaha HS5s, and a 15" subwoofer cab powered by a QSC RMX850 power amp with very DIY low pass system (DOD bass EQ pedal into a custom passive LPF see pic).
With the added projector and screen, this all doubles as a very nice sounding home theater!

From this...

Small room but I’ve learned how to make the most of it and I’m happy.

16 channels of Midas, have a few ART and Presonus pres as well, isolation is just to the right for vocals and cabs. Logic, Studio One, Reaper.

Brand new room!

Still doing some setup but coming along. Everyone’s stir crazy so did some bedroom reassignments for fun, which opened up the downstairs master bedroom (previously a useless entertainment room hah). Yoink! Vocal closet is the walk-in directly behind..

Here’s my set up. Very pleased with this array of gear. Does all I could want and more. The layout and routing changes constantly.

Interface:
Mackie DL16s

Daw:
• Logic Pro

Computer
• 2015 Macbook Pro

Monitors
• Mackie HR-24s + mackie subwoofer and/or Sony MD 7506 headphones

Inputs
• Drum set: Mic’d up 3 piece drum kit (DW Kick, ludwig snare & tom)
• Vocals: Neumann TLM 103 into a 6176 preamp/compressor
• Vocals: Shure SM 58 into a TC Helicon Voicelive 3
• Bass: Ampeg PF-20T or Mesa D800+
• Electric Guitar or Bass, direct/modeled: TC Helicon Voicelive 3
• Electric Guitar, mic’d: Mesa Boogie Express 5:25, HK TM 12, Fender BJ, or Vox LNT into a 1x12 Bogner cube with Celestian Vintage 30, captured by a Shure SM 57

The Pedal “board”
Pedal setup is less of a board, and more of a shelf situation, with an array of the usual stombox fx pedals. It’s controlled by a master loop switcher on the floor.

Current Pedals in Rotation (used for both guitar and bass):
• Compression: Markbass Compressore
• Wah: EHX Cock Fight (+ expression pedal for wah-ing)
• Boosts/Dirt: Walrus Audio Defcon 4, Fulltone OCD, MarkBass Bass Mini Distortion (a hidden gem!), EHX Green Russian Fuzz
• Modulation: MXR Phase 95, JHS Emperor Chorus
• Delay: JHS Panther Cub
• Tremelo: Fulltone Supa-Trem2
• Reverb: TC Electronics Arena (or amp reverb)
• Looping/Modeling/Vocals: TC Helicon Voicelive 3

The Looping Rig
This is the fun part. The guitars, bass and mixed drum set are all routed into the TC Helicon Voicelive 3, so all the instruments can be looped together. So it’s easy to drop a bassline, layer some guitars, jump on the drums and lay down a beat, then go back to guitar and solo for hours. Very fun!

The Video Rig
For the occasional video, a Sony HDR MV-1 set up, with audio feeding into it from the Mackie Interface.

I don’t know how many people here know who Switchfoot is but I bought their Digidesign 96i interface running Protools 10HD off Reverb. I bought it for the mojo since they recorded a lot of great albums through that interface. So far lightening has not struck twice!
Since it’s old I’m stuck on Win 7 but recordings are quality...note not my songs! Ha! Computer really needs TLC so lots of backing up files.
Anyway this virus shut down my jam nights so mostly recording alone. Not as much fun but hope to start back soon!
I’ll post pix when I get a chance.

wow this is beautiful

Thanks! It was 20 years in the making. The floors were the last piece, and a steady gig in a really annoying room paid for them. Each night, at the end of the gig, I would think, well, there’s x more square feet of the music room floor...:D

Covid has given me a lot of spare time. I cleaned out my music area in the basement. The concrete was shedding and getting dust on everything. Amps, cords, yuck. HOME DEPOT! Painted the floor ($40), bought rug tiles ($60), cut and pasted. Got some less harsh lights ($25). Fortified my old desk ($10).

Not bad for a Covid hack.

Equipment:
  • Lenovo Laptop (i7)
  • Pro Tool DAW (also have Reaper and Ableton Live)
  • Focusrite Scarlett 2i4
  • Focusrite Solo
  • Presonus Eris 4
  • Presonus Temblor 10
  • Blue Spark SL Large-Diaphragm Studio Condenser Microphone
  • Shure SM57 and Shure SM58
  • TD-8 Roland Electronic Drum Kit
  • Bass Amps: Ampeg V4B; Ampeg B-25; SWR Redhead; JMF Spectra 315 Combo Amp
  • Bass Cabs: Eden 4x10; JMF Spectra EC-315 cab
  • Guitar Amp: Fender Princeton Chorus
  • Casio Keyboard
  • Novation Launchkey Mini [MK3] MIDI Keyboard

:) The wall is half an octagon. At some point put some sound absorbing stuff in the right places I will be set. That and some hangers for the axes and some art. Maybe next pandemic....
Put the hangers up today ($$ had to buy hammer drill, but guess I needed anyway). Finally got all the toys off the floor and out of their cases. A few are off-site.
