No specific implication, only that I think that it isn't a great idea to idealize a local culture when you are unaware of your surroundings while traveling. It's just common sense.
Minorities can be of ANY ethnic distinction and ANY class depending on the circumstances of the time and place, wouldn't you agree?

Very true, I'm just not sure that anyone was idealizing a culture they weren't familiar with.
Of course. Given your aknowledgement of that fact, I'm even more baffled that two specific locations would have been named as doing so erodes the point. Moving along, however, a person of a given race is more likely to find themselves in a situation where they are the minority when they are in a geographic area where that race or class is, in fact, a statistical minority. The reverse is always posible, just not as probable.
No need to reiterate. I'm quite certain every single person on this board can say the same thing. It's the nature of life experience.And again, I am quite certain that my life experience is different than yours. So then, just my opinion.

Yeah....I did. Because I read the first Thread Topic post from our friend John Turner, who specifically stated that we might enjoy a little something from the other side of TB. I think he did that in the spirit of sharing and I kinda dig that.
Naturally, we get some individual that likes to stir the pot of negativity.....typical of many talk sites. Too bad he happens to be an active member of our side of TB.
I never said I didn't "want to listen to it". Quite the contrary. If I had no desire to converse on the subject I'd have not responded in the first place. I'm sorry you considered this a "pissing contest". I simply viewed it as an attempt to understand where you're coming from as it seems to run contrary to demographics and everything I've seen.
To be clear: I've lived in the South 27 years. 20 of it in Texas and the remainder (not surprisingly) in the New Orleans area. My life experience has shown me that, if one were to name a specific area in the South that's not a safe place for minorites after dark, New Orleans falls pretty low on the list. Vidor, Texas, on the other hand, has exactly zero African Americans and a documented history of overt racism and xenophobia in general. A house owned by a Croatian family was firebombed a few years before I left TX and I can name black individuals who were instructed to be out of town by sundown while delivering furniture for a store we worked at.
Life experience can be one thing, but if it's an isolated incident or a statistical improbability, it doesn't define the area. I got my ass kicked in Beaumont, Texas specifically for being white (at least that's what I was told while being punched). Even so, I wouldn't tell anyone to avoid the city after dark because of race.
So that was my point. I was attempting to get clarification because your recommendation doesn't jive with my 27 years here. Pissing contest? not to me. How would I "win"? If you don't care to respond with information, then that's prefectly OK, but please don't assert that I'm engaging in some juvenile excercise for the purpose of some twisted satisfaction by frustrating someone I don't know. It's not the case.

Correction: I was wrong. According to the 2000 census, there were 8 African Americans living within Vidor's city limits. While I would have to seriously question even that statistic, I didn't want to let it go unnoticed.
Hey, I might hang out and stay awhile. Maybe pour a beer. I'll have to dig through the history and see if there's any threads I need to share my opinion on.
