progressive rock recordings / bands

FWIW, I'm detecting a bit of an anti-metal sentiment in this thread. I don't really see myself as either pro or anti-prog-metal. I really like Haken's Veil... prog-metal elements, but with lots of melody and harmony, almost Queen-like in spots, and a modern prog masterpiece, IMO. That said, I do find hearing the voice of the Cookie Monster a bit jarring in progressive music....

I would add The Flower Kings to the list. Their latest is a concept with shorter songs but still a double-album worth of music. However, their earlier works definitely contain some longer 30+ minute epic songs. They're not a heavy band like a host of other "prog" bands these days. Progressive these days seems to be more associated with metal-ish bands - which is why I like bands like the Flower Kings.

Another gem of a modern progressive band is Big Big Train. Definitely in the vein of early Genesis.

Yup, TFK are one of my favourites. For someone looking for a modern prog band that sounds like 70's prog, it would be hard to a more appropriate band than the Flower Kings. Roine Stolt is one of my favourite guitar players. If anyone is looking to get into them, I would suggest The Truth Will Set You Free, Garden of Eden, Love Supreme, or Silent Inferno as good songs to start with.

Another gem is the early Neal Morse solo albums. I'm a big fan of One and the question mark album.
