I progressed to bands like Spock's Beard, and the offshoots
I don't know if this is mentioned already, but Beard members say that Gentle Giant was an influence to them. So if you want to go back the family tree or something like that, def give them a try. First 6 or 7 records are really great in my opinion.

Blue Weaver!?!? Wow... he went on to be the Bee Gees touring keyboard player!

He also went back to work with the Strawbs sometime in the nineties. I liked his work on Bursting at the Seams. It was much more focused and appropriate for the Strawbs semi-acoustic sound. On Witchwood, Wakeman was using a heavily distorted Hammond sound that just grates. Don't get me wrong... I'm a big Wakeman fan, but his work just didn't fit with the Strawbs. His other session work (Bowie, Cat Stevens) fitted well with the songs, even though it's trademark Wakeman.

Never really considered them to be progressive.

Ya I would classify the Dead as a jam band … I guess you could say they progressed from the 3 minute song into 30 minute jams … but definitely a jam band ...

I am not a big Dead fan … but I appreciate anybody who knows how to improvise

Saint Karloff - more stonery and doomy, but some hot poopie playing. Their Interstellar Voodoo is my AOTY pick

Elder - especially the latest Reflections of a Floating World. Kinda Jammy, kinda doomy here and there [more so on earlier records], def progressive.

Ecstatic Vision - spacerock ala Hawkwind

Electric Moon - also old school spacerock, love em but might be too jammy and purposely repetitive [aka trance-inducing!] for some

Sacri Monti - another great newish record - Waiting Room for the Magic Hour. Fantastic! Another AOTY candidate

Boss Keloid - seconded from upthread for their album Melted on the Inch
