Jeeze. I know 16 year olds who have their own apartments. Live alone. Own their own car, and work for it ALL. They work like dogs for it too, are you saying that their parents can take it all away at the drop of a hat? They never had their parents co-sign for any of it, not even the apartment lease.

As I said. If my mom stole $1000 dollars from me and wouldn't give it back. Of course I would press charges. I love my mom with all my heart, but she obviously doesn't love me if she decides to steal a grand from me and not give it back, she either needs help, or punishment. Personal relationships don't mean anything when someone does something like that. If my mom starved me as a child or beat me would you expect me to "let it go because she's you mom"? Of course not. Morality is morality.

If it IS the law in the US to be the other way, that's a VERY contradictory way to be for the place that claims everyone is free.

You can legally move out and live on your own at any age in Canada, as long as you can completely support yourself and need no assistance. As far as I know, I've been told that by adults who have underage children that have moved out. I personally know my friend Les was living on his own at 15 for a while because his mom was unreasonable.

And I would use the law to my advantage if someone stole my property and would not return it. Whether it's my mom, or my grandmother, or my wife, or the kid from the Kix commercials.

I've never heard of community property, sorry.

My parents and I both agree that if I did something wrong and needed punishment they could take away my priveledge to use my music gear, but they couldn't take it away from me, it's mine, not theirs. That isn't just because they are reasonable human beings, it's because that is the way things are. I bought it, it's mine.

I guess this is where we differ. I do not consider what was done here to Alex by his mom as stealing. Was it a bit overboard? Sure.

Dude....you would press charges against your own grandma? Your wife? Dang. What kind of message is todays music sending you guys? :confused:

That's why you're going off like this then. Also why you couldn't arrest your wife. At least hear.

Why was it not stealing?

If your bandmate got mad at you for screwing a song up at your last gig and took your amp and pawned it would it not be stealing?

If your roomate got mad at you for forgetting to wash the pot you made beefaroni in last night and pawned it would it not be stealing?

The only difference is that it's his mom, and that is NO excuse.

That is where there is clear line of difference to me. Blood is thicker than water in my mind. No matter how much I like my band mates, they aren't family. Family is different, especially when living in the same home.

I did say it was overboard to do such, but she did not steal anything. He was disciplined for doing something stupid. Harsh and unrealistic? You bet.

Nice to know your family can take advantage of you as much as they want without any reprocussion.

Edit: Selling someone elses property is considered stealing in Canada.

No, you're being dramatic Todd. What has been forgotten here is that Alex did something wrong. It wasn't like his mom went walking through the house and decided to gather up his bass gear and go sell it for something to do.

With the exception of murdering my wife or kids, there is no instance where I would ever considering pressing charges against my parents or suing them. I just wouldn't.
