Somebody give this guy a detention. :p

Having been a guy who got some detentions, and also a guy who got into a few good schools, not to mention that I'm a guy who works at a university, I think maybe you're well over paranoid and stressed about the college entrance thing. Your grades, test scores and extracurricular activities are about 98% of what schools look at.

Schools are NOT looking for an excuse to throw your ap in the trash. Its not like sending in the rebate form for that new thing you bought at bestbuy.

She still won't talk to me, though. :hmm: From what my dad has told me (he's not really mad at me, he just supports my mom to stay out of the doghouse when stuff like this happens) most of what my mom is angry about is that now I have a detention on my permanent record. Colleges don't like that too much. In the end, I realize that they just want what's best for me, they are just bad at doing that. :D :hmm:

Sorry, my friend, but it's pretty weak that your dad is afraid to step in and regulate. Who wears the pants, anyway? :hmm:

Second, high school exists to make everything seem harder than it actually is. Relax, you'll be fine when it comes to college apps, especially with grades like yours.

And also - good or bad idea to show her this thread to make her realize how incredibly incompetently unimaginably insanely irrational she was being?
Terrible, terrible idea.

I think I can sum up a logical course of action:

-Get off Talkbass. I know this is hard for you, but it can be done. ;)

-Heart to heart with the rents, not mentioning the gear. Find out if there's more to the story, just not this story. It may change nothing, but at least it'll put you and your mom on better terms

-School help. Begin with the your friend and the teacher, then go either guidance and/or principal. A detention is a bad thing, you might as well see if you can get it removed. And your mom will respect no one more than the principal

-Then, after the school authority/authorities have had a discussion with the rents, go to your mom again, this time talking about the gear. If she still will not repent, she really is off the deep end.

-If she does not repent, you need assistance outside of the school. Counseling. Not a cop. Counseling.

-Don't get the law involved, that would do far more damage in the long run than the loss of a nice rig

-If nothing else works (and many are going to disagree with me here) I would move out. Shack up with a buddy, or the Y or something. Just for a while, give yourselves some separation.

-Remember: Teachers/school officials have a very difficult time admitting and correcting there mistakes, and would much rather just ignore the situation and hope it goes away. You will need to be annoying, and hope that your teacher is willing to help you out. If not, I fear all may be lost.

Keep us posted! :hyper:

I don't care if some of you are cops that said otherwise. If he bought the gear with money he earned himself through a job, it's his property. Period. At least here in Canada it is, we tend to have basic common sense.
Why do you think it is that so many child actors end up broke? Their rotten parents spend the money. I didn't say it was right so much as that's the way it is.

But it goes both ways, they are responsible for keeping you safe, fed, clothed, and a roof over your head till your 18. There are some rotten kids that should get the boot in their teens also. That's not fair either.

Alright Todd, what would a sensible Canadian like yourself do? Go file a police report against your own mother and press charges? Hire an attorney to prosecute your mother?

Their parents spend the money because they sign the contracts, they are the managers, etc. They can take as much money as they want as they are the ones dealing with the childrens money.

If I'm working at Mickey D's, my parents sure as hell don't have even their pinky nail on my money, paycheck, bank card, bank account, receipts, ANYTHING. It's none of their bees wax, and not theirs. It's mine, no matter how old I am.

And why do they sign the contracts? Because you can't sue anyone under 18, you have to sue the parents.

I never said to prosecute the mom, but I would never let her take something that is mine and sell it. If she DIDN'T return it, I would tell her, yes, that it IS illegal, and yes, I could press charges. That I didn't want to, and that I love her and want to work things out so that we can have a happy, healthy, mutual respected relationship, and if not, then she caused it, I don't let 1000 dollars fall out of my pocket, and I don't let my mother steal it either.

If this post had have been typed this way...
"I had planned on buying my dream amp today so I took $1000 dollars out of my bank account that I had been saving for awhile, I left it on my dresser. Later I came home and my mom had told me she was angry at me so as punishment she took my money and bought earings"
...it would be the exact same scenario. It wasn't hers to take, it wasn't hers to sell. Whether you love her or not, it was still wrong and illegal, and I wouldn't allow it to happen, if you can work it out as family, awesome. If not, that's unfortunate, but it's still $1000 dollars and to me, that is a metric buttload of money, and I would NEVER let someone else take it from me.

Of course you can't sign a contract under 18, but you can certainly own things! And have money of your own!

Jeeze. I know 16 year olds who have their own apartments. Live alone. Own their own car, and work for it ALL. They work like dogs for it too, are you saying that their parents can take it all away at the drop of a hat? They never had their parents co-sign for any of it, not even the apartment lease.

I've made my point. All I can say is call a cop and see what happen.:)
