REDDI, I'm a bit confused

Yes the torn up REDDI Belongs to a bass player that played in the band ..... IIRC .....(FREE Credit Report Dot Com) YOu remember TV the commercials..
I think he is still on this forum too.. ... He had it in a gig bag on his car. .Forgot he put it there and took off driving . The REDDI in a gig bag got off an exit too early on the 405! lol.. The DI still worked too

Man, its amazing how offended some of you guys get but opinions that don't line up with your own.

So there are units out there for less than a REDDI that deliver comparable quality for less than the cost of a REDDI. I was just in disbelief that its the only unit of its kind out there and so much could be charged for it. For all those who could afford one, i hope you enjoy it and it continues to serve you well.
You guys are funny with this whole "Its a B-15 circuit etc..." No its not, just a tube buffered DI but by all means if the kool-aide tastes good by all means keep drinking it.

It's your attitude people react to.

I can guarantee the Broughton DI will cost as much as soon as he gets the reputation and reknown to start charging a price that will earn him some money, as it's evident he is practically giving it away.

And then people will come here and start with the Broughton knocking, and touting their pet product. It's a pity to like one thing some people have to dislike something else.

Gentlemen and Ladies,

We're all adults here. Music is not adversarial. At least it's not supposed to be.

To 10cc, Dave Hill and Primusfan1969, Thank you for your heartfelt input. 10cc, would you be so kind as to post some audio and video of you playing through the two boxes so that we could all hear it? While I would like to take your word for it, I don't know that I've heard your playing on anything because I only know your moniker which is the name of a band or the weight classification for you know.... All of you are welcome to do so, in fact.

In any event, it would be cool to hear the comparison of these (to me) distinctly different boxes.

Thanks for your time.

Stay groovy,

RH

Normally I'm not fan of 'put up or shut of posts', but if someone is going to come here claiming objective superiority for something and manage to insult by implication a thread full of studio pros and golden eared working bassists, I say thank you for the effort!

Read the OP, my attitude is that of confusion as what makes people want to pay $700+ for a DI box? Im not gonna lie, some of my responses have been less than polite but the thing is they are responses to peoples unhelpful and condescending comments to my query. Im sorry if you guys don't like my attitude but then again, you don't have to participate in the thread

Your question has been answered many times over, but obviously not to your satisfaction as you know what you wanted to hear, and you understood the reaction you would get from your OP.

Implicit in your comments is an insult aimed at those you feel do not share your opinions, ad this is a sure way to not make friends and influence anyone.

The take it or leave it stuff is not very endearing either, because you start a thread doesn't mean you own it or decide what direction it goes in.

Here is my take on the P15 vs the REDDI. Have no dog in this hunt.

As a result of this thread I decided I wanted a tube DI. First choice was the P15 because of the reviews but mainly D/t the price so I PMed the guy who makes them and he promptly and professionally replied. He has a run of 15 being released and the will be in a few weeks and all are spoken for. He did offer to put me on the list and explained some people drop out when the time comes to finalize the order.

Waiting for something with the possibility of not getting it would drive me crazy so I respectfully declined. I am quite certain the P15 is a fine unit but in my opinion it essentially doesn't exist. (Yet.) Price no longer matters if you cannot buy it to fill an immediate need IMO.

The question wasn't really adressed until 5th page of the thread i believe (the bit about the type of transformer in the REDDI, don't remember who said it and after rereading the thread, the type of transformer is only mentioned in one post)

Your mistaken my friend, my comments are aimed at people who take this(talkbass) too seriously. Im not here to make friends and influence people... I have a life.

No comment needed.

Your question was answered in post #4.

Really, you're surprised that your "I don't get why this costs so much" thread hasn't gone well?

I better put on a helmet and bullet proof vest because I'm sure I'll catch a lot of flack for this.

So the question is what is the big deal with these? From my understanding this unit is a tube buffered DI with an above average transformer? Is that all this thing is? It just seems that $745 for an DI box seems a bit excessive doesn't it? Ive used them before, they are definitely an improvement from a generic DI tone but it just seems like they are getting away with murder charging what they do for what it is? If you part is out its less than $300 in parts and doesn't seem all that labor intensive? Am i the only one who doesn't get it ?
Answers;
Yes you should.
People really like them.
Yes and no.
No.
No.
No.
Yes it is.
Apparently, yes. So far.

Respectfully yours,
RW.

"Yes...$300 in parts. Plus the cost of labour, plus the cost of the building they are made in, plus the cost of the property tax, plus the cost of maintenance of said building, plus the cost of utilities (water, electricity, heating) plus the cost of shipping the parts involved, plus the cost of employee benefits, plus the cost of..."

A condescending reply about manufacturing costs (have quite a bit of manufacturing experience under my belt albeit not electronics manufacturing so the costs of doing business is not lost on me

A real answer finally appeared by post #110
"The REDDI is actually unique as it is the only tube DI currently on the market so far ( that I know of anyway) that uses a real single ended output transformer. The primary side of the transformer is used as the AC load on the tube and has to pass DC current. This necessitates a larger and inherently more expensive transformer than in the typical circuit used in these boxes which is a resistor loaded tube, capacitor coupled out to a small transformer to balance and drop the output impedance (like the SVT-DI or the Demeter for example). Off the shelf transformers of this type run $200+ and typically don't have the extended low end response of the one in the REDDI. Good low end performance requires a lot of primary inductance and you need a large core and lots of wire to get that in a transformer with the air gap between windings required to pass DC and that gets expensive. I suspect that even at volume discounts that transformer probably costs A-Designs 200+ per unit. Then factor in all of the other parts and I'd bet that $300 is on the low side for that product. I've been working on my own unique tube direct box/preamp design and the price of any kind of custom case or even an off the shelf one would put you in the horrors. I'm looking at $120 for a Hammond half rack box, barely big enough to fit the thing into and I will have to do my own machining. Even at 1000 volume, a custom case would cost over $100.

At any rate, whether the REDDI's performance suits you or not is highly subjective but I don't think it's fair to dismiss it as "just" a tube buffered DI box, just as it's not fair to dismiss the P15 as "just" a B15 clone. I say this as a potential future competitor for both. :D

Out of all of these upscale DIs, the Avalon is still by far the most common, followed by the REDDI in my totally anecdotal experience. Every studio I've been to in the past 10 years has a U5."

I had to wait for my D800 and I can verify that it does indeed exist.;)

That was me (yet another Canadian). :D

I do think you probably could have asked the question in a less contentious manner and would probably have gotten fewer snarky responses if you had. I'm not bothered by that but I can understand why other folks might be. I have been inside a few of these boxes and have done quite a bit of research into exactly what makes them tick in the process of designing my own. I can't speak to the P15 as I don't know the exact circuit but it certainly seems like an excellent device based on the pics, clips and rave reviews I've seen. I've examined the REDDI circuit in depth and it's brilliant in its simplicity and execution. A-designs seems to be selling a lot of them so I don't think it's overpriced at all. YMMV, of course. I'm not saying any of this as a fanboy, either. I think my design is just as good as any of the others (I would think that :D) while in no way a clone of anything. I'm looking at material cost for a prototype unit and it's north of $500US with an off the shelf output transformer and a generic case. If I was going to manufacture a bunch of them, the costs would drop quite a bit but they'd still be significant.
