REDDI Tube DI Mega-thread-III

Ya, just finally checked him out and he's really good. I think he gets a really good sound, too, but how could you not get a good sound when you play like that?
Well, I don't have his snappy right-hand technique but I'm not a slouch. So it was always embarrassing that my bass would sound far better on ambient live recordings than when I tried to record a studio bass part! Thanks again for the feedback; my SO just placed the order for a gift REDDI yesterday

I could say from the angle of the picture taken, the cover is hiding the LED from view haha. Was this at a session?
I just came back from a production show. Pedalboard -> REDDI -> FOH. Went out into the audience afterwards to talk to some friends and a bunch of people came up to me saying the bass sounded fantastic. They could hear everything I played up high. I fricken love this thing. I've said it before, but this is the best investment I've made gear wise. It just "works".

Not good to walk on those cables. Looping them can cause issues, better to lie them flat and snake them back and forth if they aretoo long.
Quick question for all the REDDI users! The church I play at on Sundays just got a REDDI and I am curious as to your approach to the gain/volume knob. The sound engineer at the church insists that the knob has to be "cranked" to get the tube sound out of it. Is that the case? All the demo videos I have seen show the volume knob around 1 o'clock. Is it similar to a tube preamp where you can get the major tube saturation by cranking it? Is it best practice to adjust the knob to get the proper input level needed at the board? I think the spec shows something like +24dB gain... which sounds like a LOT to be running the volume knob cranked.

The VOL control is AFTER the output transformer.. So it has no effect on the DRIVE of the REDDI.. The sound of the REDDI is the REDDI no matter where you set the Vol control. I always set mine at 12 o'clock high.. The reason? Its a good average output for most consoles to handle .. and it easy to remember if i have to come back and redo a part etc.. 12 noon is what i use 99.99999999% of the time
EDIT: I think the output of the REDDI is 16 dB....
I also have an API and A Design EM500 Gold preamp that i have tried running into the REDDI... But i like the REDDI straight by itself..
I actually have to REDDIs.. Sometimes i will run one clean and use the second to run a dirtbox like a Darkglass VMT on the second one..

I was using my Alleva P4 and an EUB bass on a Christmas gig this week... Two REDDIs.. one on each.. I used the Compressor Pro on the electric and the keeley Bassist on the EUB then feeding the proper REDDI.. This was at set up time. still hooking stuff up
Thanks! That's what I thought, but I didn't want to bring it up to the sound engineer if I wasn't correct. You are right on the gain... 16dB range with a max balanced xlr output level of +22dBu.

This is not a REDDI question per se, but anybody who has a REDDI cares a lot about their FOH tone and reliability so this seems like a good place to post.
Here is the question - do you bring your own XLR cable to run from your DI into the house snake, or do you plug a house cable into your DI?
Seems like a purist might want to run his own gear all the way up to the snake (rational or not).

House cable. Don't want to get cables mixed up and lost.
As for volume, I run my Reddi at about 10:00 so it is about the same volume as a typical Countryman DI.

For a Christmas gig those REDDI's would look good with big green bows except somebody might use that as an excuse to take them home (oops, thought it was a gift).

Has anyone here done an A/B comparison of the Khan vs the REDDI? Not too much info on the Khan on Talkbass that I could find but the fact that it is basically a reissue of the old Ampeg tube DI got my attention.
For me the "wet" thru signal, smaller size/weight, lower cost, ability to function as a passive DI and the Ampeg heritage are all persuasive even though I have an opportunity to pick up a REDDI for the same $600.

I haven't been on TB for awhile, but last night's event warranted a comment. My band is part of an agency, and multiple bands play a showcase of their songs for potential clients. I had been using the studio's DI at the showcases as well as the other 7 bands, but yesterday I decided to use my REDDI. My band was first to showcase. I didn't tell anyone that I was going to use the REDDI, I just disconnected the studio's DI and connected mine. As the owner of the agency and other bands showed up we started sound check; the difference was immediately noticed by everyone. The owner came on stage to ask me, "what in the hell are you using, the bass guitars have never sounded that good." I just pointed to the floor and said "it's my REDDI DI." He used more profanity and then said we have to get one of those for the studio. It didn't stop there. As the other musicians entered the room, they just stood in front of the stage with their mouths open, in awe. They all just looked at the DI as if they had seen a ghost and started asking me where they could buy one. I have never seen a response like that over any piece of gear; they were blown away. Well, at the end of our performance I disconnected the REDDI and the other bass players begged me to leave it for them, but I couldn't because I had to leave. But I saw and heard first hand the difference that DI makes in the overall sound of the band. From now on, I will not showcase or perfom without it.
Pete, who makes the REDDI told me to run it at either 9:00 or 10:00, and that's what I have done.

Dang. I really find some of the accolades for the REDDI hard to swallow, but am getting close to a point where I may have to hear for myself. Still, the Khan would be so much easier to carry around and it has an effected through which the REDDI does not.

I need to unsubscribe from this thread. My only gig is at church - DI/IEM all the way. People have no complaints on my sound now - nor do I really. Roscoe basses to a Radial JDI to the house. Sounds great. I can't imagine a noticeable difference and it being that much better than what I have...and what I have fits on a Pedaltrain Nano.
