REDDI Tube DI Mega-thread-III

Dang. I really find some of the accolades for the REDDI hard to swallow, but am getting close to a point where I may have to hear for myself. Still, the Khan would be so much easier to carry around and it has an effected through which the REDDI does not.

I still don't see why the effected through is that big a deal. If you plug the REDDI directly into an amp from the XLR out there is a difference, but its not mind blowing or anything like that. The biggest difference with these DI's is best heard through a good FOH or in the studio. They sit the bass in the mix perfectly, and really add a lot of fullness to the upper register without being even remotely muddy. Through an amp, you're already getting coloration from the amp/cabinet and the magic of the REDDI is kind of lost when using it this way. They aren't cheap, and they aren't for everyone, but if you play live through a FOH a lot, they are certainly worth looking at. For me, its worth its weight in gold.

Maybe part of what I'm missing is the fact that house PA is not a bass amp and the REDDI is the perfect translator?

This is the latest original track I got back from my band's recording session last month. I used my Mike Lull M5V on this particular song, straight into my REDDI. I try to take the KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) approach on our recordings, because I always want to serve the song first and foremost. Plus, our singer is a writer for Sony Publishing in Nashville, so many of our recordings are meant to be demo's for the label.

Yeah the REDDI sounds great but it also makes helluva good amp wedge.

Last month i was on a video shoot for instructional videos. and they used the Laser LED to backlight a mixing console.. Worked great and just the right amount of bLUE

After haunting this and other threads for a few months, I ended up ordering a Noble DI/Preamp, partly because of the size but mostly because of the effected 1/4 inch through. That was a REALLY tough call since the REDDI was available from Musicians Friend last week for $600 (somehow A Designs was not on the exclusion list for the 20% off sale). Sill, I'm sure the REDDI is an awesome box and hope to try one some day.

Oh, I get it...he was playing both sides of the fence. Steve, you have a very promising career in politics ahead of you :D

As a Democrat perhaps. To be successful as a Republican it seems like all you have to do is say stupid and/or offensive stuff. I can say that because I am one (Republican that is), but only until there is an electable Libertarian. Of course I'm stupid and offensive sometimes too (like right now). :) :)

Well now...I learned a very important lesson tonight...I learned that if you're playing on a hollow wooden outdoor stage with 4 subwoofers directly under it and vibrating it like crazy, it's best not to place the REDDI directly on the stage floor. It's a very nice stage, but that's the big design flaw in it.

What ended up happening is that the bass drum was causing the stage to vibrate a lot more than usual (sound tech is a nice kid but he's still kind of green), and I believe the REDDI might have been picking it up, because every time I hit a low G note I ended up creating a feedback loop that wouldn't stop until the sound tech killed my signal. I thought maybe the amp was too loud so I turned it down all the way and it still did it. Then I thought maybe the tube went microphonic, but I tried it on break and it wasn't doing it, and I've had it on at home for 2 hours now and it's fine.

I probably could have fixed it by setting the REDDI on top of its cover to soak up excess vibrations (because I knew the tech wouldn't fix it) , but I got spooked by it and ended up using the house Whirlwind Imp 2 for the rest of the night, which depressed me greatly. I used to have a DI pedal on my board I could have used but I recently reconfigured my board and don't use a DI pedal anymore, and we were outside and I thought it might rain so I brought my little combo amp that doesn't have a DI. So Imp 2 it was. OK, so it's not the best DI in the world, but it got me through the gig and people enjoyed us anyway. But man...it's just not a good DI. And what really sucks is I was playing so well :D

Those spongy stages can wreak havoc. I use an Auralex Gramma as well.

No matter how well a system is isolated from vibrations, there are resonances that can overwhelm what is in place. In this case, moving the REDDI or placing it on something is well worth trying, but it may not have helped if the vibrations were too intense.

That's why I just stayed with the Imp 2, but I think it probably would have worked to just lay it on the carrying bag.
