REDDI Tube DI Mega Thread . Potential megathread that is.

I love my REDDI to pieces (though I have to admit, I don't use it live--call me lazy and paranoid, I just like the size and indestructibility of my JDI).
Anyhow, one thing y'all should try if you haven't yet is using it to record things OTHER than bass. I have used it on a Wurly and got a totally killer sound. Also recently when tracking an analog synth bass part I thought, "what the heck, might as well try it"--sho nuff it had that extra something special--that "weight" and presence.

totally agreed.

I love it on acoustic guitars, synth, Rhodes, etc etc etc.

Hey guys!! I just got one of these for review. I posted an initial little soundclip on my site, www.TheBassHang.com, and will be doing a full blown video review with a bunch of different basses. I used the REDDI on my gigs this past weekend and it was awesome!! The foh guy really appreciated it...haha!! Here's a pic of the bad boy!! The sound clip is of a 1993 MIJ Fender RI going straight into the REDDI then right into my computer.

yep. there's a lot of stuff out there that's just dripping with compression. that's cool....it works for the songs, i guess. me, i'd rather add a little barely noticeable overdrive instead.

I actually used the REDDI recently on a session, signal path was Bass --> REDDI --> Distressor -- DAW, no preamps involved. We ended up pushing the REDDI pretty hard into the distressor, then actually doing fairly light compression from there. It pretty much did what you describe, put some barely noticeable drive on the signal to round it out and give it a little more sustain, without being overly compressed.

Now, like everyone else, I want one :)

I recently had some fun with the REDDI, too. This was all done with my personal Roscoe Century Signature V. I used some pedals (MXR M82 Env Filter & T-Rex Bass Juice, EBS DynaVerb) in front of the REDDI, too, just to see how it takes pedals. The delay on the dirty tone was added in my recording software (Sonar).

I'm pretty knocked out. I didn't get a REDDI thinking I'd gig with it, I was intending to just to use it in our studio... Now I'm not so sure, it really does help record a nice bass nicely, and my band usually records our live shows... more gear to haul! :)

The bass line was all neck pickup, everything else was done with a slight bridge bias.

Does anyone know exactly what's happening with the "Thru" signal. Does that bypass the REDDI's internals, or is it being colored by the REDDI?

I only ask because when I recorded the clip above, I ran the REDDI "thru" into my Alembic F1X preamp. I then recorded the line out signal from both the REDDI and F1X, thinking I'd hear a difference. There was a slight difference, but nothing earth shattering. It dawned on me afterward that the REDDI "thru" signal might have gotten the REDDI treatment...

Just curious at this point...

The Thru is basically a "Y" thru.. Not after REDDI cicuit.

Here you go... expensive, maybe... but its guaranteed for life and practically indestructible. I put all my photo gear in Pelican cases. (And no, I'm not an endorser or employee of Pelican). :p

$80 to protect a $700 piece of (what seems to be described as) essential sound equipment is chump change.

Oh and I'm totally subscribed...

Also:

I've been going back and forth between this DI and the Avalon U5. Anyone have experience with both? Major differences? Apples and oranges or just different apples?

Cheers!

+1 for Pelican cases. They are expensive but like you said, practically unbreakable, and they will replace it if you do. I think you would have to deliberately try to harm your gear in order for these to break. Mine is also buoyant to 350 lbs, so it doubles as a raft if I ever get caught in a trans-pacific plane crash with it... knock on wood ;)

In Europe they are more like 130€ / 180$ :(

Sorry for the off topic but are those SBMM in the pic?
They are great underrated basses.

Back on track

I do need a case for my Reddi thanks for the input folks.

Any other suggestions?

You guys have been gushing so much . . . I was actually ready to succumb to the hype and drink the Kool Aid, but then spent some time over at Bass-taters, er, Space-taters, I mean, Bass-tasters (basstasters.com) . . . Some comparos were difficult to make, given that the instruments vary from clip to clip . . . as does the playing technique . . . as does the recording quality . . .

Anyway from listening to the acclaimed and revered Reddi . . . it is cool . . . but so are

the Radial JDI,

the DI in the AI Clarus,

the DI in the GB Neo Pak 3.5,

the Summit Audio TD-100,

and I am embarrassed to say . . .

the :eek:Behringer MIC200:eek: . . .

as previewed with the "Groove" clips of Sadowsky Vintage 5, Fender MIM, and Sadowsky PJ4 . . . Using studio monitors and sound isolating headphones . . . The Eden Navigator is quite sweet as well . . .

So . . . No Kool Aid for me . . . I am not ready, and my bank account is not ready. . . for Reddi . . .

The thing is, I already have the priviledge to use the Eden, AI, and Radial DIs . . . I was thinking of trying a "smaller (than the Eden) tube DI" . . . and I may have found it . . . for :eyebrow:$40?:eyebrow: The Behringer MIC200 . . . whudda thunkit? The poor (smart) man's Reddi?

You know what? It's fine if you're not ready, and even if you think that a Behringer sounds good to you! (I have some Behringer tube outboard gear that I enjoy quite a bit in my studio!)

However, coming in here and saying that people are crazy, or dumb for buying a REDDI? Might want to re-think your strategy. Not only is it disrespectful to folks, it makes you seem to be a jerk, which you may or may not be, as I don't know you personally.

Regardless, all the DI's you listed ARE, in fact, great DI's! I have a REDDI, but I also use a Countryman type 85, Radial J48 and JDI, and several more. They all sound good, but for my bass, I generally prefer the REDDI. Just personal preference is all. I also like the DI out on a DB750, Trace Elliot V-Type preamp, and a few more. All depends on the situation.

Also, I stopped using Bass Tasters as a benchmark site a long time ago. The recording process for their clips bugs me, as I want something that was recorded directly into a console or preamp, which is then re-amped into whatever they're trying to show, then both sets of clips are posted, for comparisons sake. This whole, recording everything fresh every time can and will throw all the clips off, at least, IMO.

Then again, I'm a guy who likes to try before I buy generally, so take that all with a grain or two of salt.

. . . and I may have found it . . . for :eyebrow:$40?:eyebrow: The Behringer MIC200 . . . whudda thunkit? The poor (smart) man's Reddi?

Please do let us know how that works out for you. For $40, you almost can't go wrong. If it stinks, what have you lost?

That's the beauty of Berhinger gear. It's pretty much disposable. I'm not ashamed to say I've used some in the past, particularly on the FOH/PA side of things (quad compressors, EQs, etc.). I don't know that I'd touch the stuff now, but my budget is different now than it was 10 years ago. My goals are much different now, too. I now want my live and recorded tone to match pro quality, and that simply doesn't come cheap. Years ago, I just wanted to play the gig and be heard, ya know?

So do what's right for you and where you're at! Right on.
