Reiner Amplification Megathread

Thanks Jonathan! The five string bass has been a major change for me. I acquired it last July and have played it almost exclusively since then. What a world of difference! Opens up all kinds of new expression. I'm especially "jazzed" by the Sadowsky preamp. Once I figured out how it worked, it made a night-and-day difference in tone.

The Darkglass VMT does a fine job. I'm not into huge distortion. This pedal works great for filling in the sound when the band mix gets rockin'. I've used a Turbo Tuner for several years and just upgraded to the new 300 model because it provides a brighter image, which is handy for all the outdoor-in-the-sun gigs I play. Had to shade the 200 model's display to see it in the sun.

One thing that surprised me about this tone demo was how similar your DI is to the mic'd signal. The Barefaced BB2 is known for a clear signal, and while I have the "PA-like" horn dialed off about 33%, the sound of the mic'd cab is still nearly identical to your DI. Based on this test, I will never rue leaving the bass mic home from a gig when I do a live recording because the Studio 1200's DI renders a perfect image of what's coming out of the cab. You did an excellent job with this amp -- I continue to be amazed by its capabilities!

I'm excited about the prospect of a fiver too - I strung one of my fours BEAD to have a low B for testing, but I'm looking forward to having a five. I'm going to start passive and likely add a preamp at some point. What strings are you running?

With the DI, are you running pre or post EQ? One thing I'm proud of is how close the two signals sound with the EQ flat - it's a good indication of the transparency that is maintained throughout the signal chain.

Did you get the newer 300 that can take a battery? I'll likely always run off power but figure it's worth it to have the option if you have the bit of extra space.

I'm loving my Duality @Darkglass for heavy stuff and I think the VMT will excel at the mild OD. And I got the B3K just because! MF keeps bumping the date but they are saying end of the month for both, hope it doesn't take too long for them to get their shipment.

Strings are Fender 82505M 5-string medium long scale. They are nickel-plated steel taperwounds. REALLY like these!

I ran the DI in "post" mode but didn't need to because (a) the amp EQ was set flat and (b) the Darkglass VMT was in front of the signal chain so it altered the signal when switched on - irrespective of the DI setting. Usually I run the DI in "pre" mode.

Yes, the ST-300 accepts the battery. I prefer that because it simplifies wiring AC at the gig, especially if I'm not running any other pedals. Plus the single 9v alkaline battery is good for 12 hours / about 1,000 tunes ups according to the manual.

Thanks for the kind words man!

I just checked and subscribed to your YouTube channel, very impressive work!

Thanks Doug, back at ya! And I have to say, I love all the awesome demo videos you guys do (though my wallet doesn't) - top notch! Wish more manufacturers would follow suit!

YouTube's weekly mailing included a new one from Reiner Amps:

Of course I'm still thrilled with my Studio 1200, I use it for every gig -- the only exception was with the house band at an open mic where other bassists (including possible n00bs) would be using my rig. That said, the VHF 700 has a slightly different flavor, and I like it too!

JGR, I know you're dealing with lots of snow in addition to your usual duties, but what's the status on your 1x10 and 2x10 cabs?

Hi Ken,

Regarding the cabs, the plan is to do one more VHF700 proto for some final optimization, then finish the two 1200's sitting on my bench. Once that is out of the way, things should be thawed out a bit and I can get back into the shop. I want to build one more 210 proto in a more conventional configuration with ports on the side - I can use the shell for two different variations - the "rock" one you heard, as well as the extended range variant -the one in the 110+3 clips - but its going to be 210 plus a soft dome mid instead of the 3's. I have a couple of switching ideas for both, as well as some designs mods that should lighten them a bit more.

So... the rock version would come with no mid driver, I assume. Will the extended range version have an attenuator for the mid/hf driver? Not a big deal (especially given that there's the rock version), just curious. The protos sounded killer, I look forward to checking out the design tweaks!

Yeah, actually that's one of the things I've been contemplating as the "extended range" tens have great top end on their own to about 4kHz, so very useable by themselves.

I too am excited about your cabs. I've been considering a second Berg HD210, but your tall 210 "rock" cab sounds pretty ideal to me.

I wasn't sure if folks would dig the tall form factor 210, hence prototyping the more traditional layout!

No way. Taller is better. Make it wide enough to place the S1200 on top (maybe some "pucks" on top for the S1200's feet) but focus on getting the drivers up to ear level, and using up less real estate on a cramped stage. Tilt and roll like you mentioned previously with a kick plate on the bottom to keep shoe prints off of the finish, and some well placed side handles for loading it or transporting over non-rollable surfaces. If you do that and get the sensitivity up to the level of a commercial 410 while still sounding good I'll buy one the instant they're available :p

Just curious, how wide is "wide enough for the S1200", or maybe, how wide is the S1200?? Thx.

Perhaps silky and I are in the minority, but count me as one who prefers taller. Hell, I even like the idea of stacking your small 1x10 on top of your tall 2x10. A few months ago (?) I found it interesting that you said those two would be compatible even though each would be 8 ohms... not sure if that's still true, but I approve of a tall-and-skinny-modular-3x10....

.....possibly because I like the idea of something onstage that's even skinnier than I am!

I used to use the Studio 1200 with a Fearless 210. The narrow dimensions of the cab were too small for the S1200, which sucked up all the real estate at the top and was slightly unstable without an adequate footing. The amp was almost knocked off once when some kids at a winery gig started tugging on our electric cable. We were set up on a lawn and nothing was level. Whew! Now I use a Barefaced BB2 (12" main driver) and it provides enough real estate for a solid mounting of the amp and the cab is inherently stable and immune to a jolt tipping it over (like a 210, and especially a 310 which would be super top heavy).
