*one piece of advice- regardless of which set, the silk windings on the .136 B will have to be trimmed to pass through the ferrule. Look back upthread, about page 29 or 30... @RVBASS had this trouble.

The reason I was looking at the JF365 set is because it's a super long scale (36") and the JF345 is a long scale (34"). The RB-5 is a 35" scale. You didn't have any issues with string length using the 345 set?

Not on the Electrolines, no... I've never used them on my Renaissance basses. (I personally like the T-I AcousticCores on my Rens) The only difference I can think of is the string-thru body Ren might rob some length... the 35" scale is the same. You might better to go with the longer string for that reason alone. Either that, or trim the silks off.

The tension on these strings seems a bit higher/stiffer than TI's and the silks on the strings are blue in color. I've been using JF344's on some of my basses for a number of years and know that Thomastik's have red silks, and definitely don't feel as stiff as these.

So, seeing that the RB-5 is a 35" scale bass, has anyone used the TI's on one? If so, did you use the JF365 set as they are the super long scale (36")? The only other 5 string flatwound set TI offers is the JF345, but they are for a 34" scale.

Those do look like Chromes in the photos which will be stiffer.

I used the TI JFs on my Renaissance 5 string and I'm almost positive I used the JF365 set. I still have the package in my string box and I can't think of another bass I've had that I would have used the longer length for. Sounded great...loved them on that fretless! Also, I don't recall having a problem with the B string thickness. It was tight but I was able to get it through without modifying the string at all.

Bumping our old thread today made me get the Turners out and give 'em the ol' once-over.

I haven't been able to play much at all until recently... not been gigging anywhere since September; currently on another forced medical hiatus. Finally got another steroid injection first of this month that got my fingers back, so I am at least wood-shedding a little bit each night.

I always forget how incredibly responsive these things are. I just spent about an hour feeding my Electroline 5-string through an Alembic F-1X preamp and SF-2 Superfilter, then on to my biamped practice room rig. All the picture frames in the house are crooked now, and something fell over in the next room. :smug:

Thanks for the replies and advice everyone! I did own a Renaissance RB-4 Fretted years ago that I bought new from Bass Central in Orlando, FL but wound up including it in a trade deal to obtain a vintage Fender P bass. I have a new project that I'm currently in that's a quasi acoustic-electric trio and I thought the RB-5 would be the perfect instrument for it.

Glad to be back on the Rick Turner train! :)
