I do think there should be a requirement for a link in a member's profile to their website or some way of identifying them. Total anonymity is not good.

Greg, you don't have to start over, the mods can change your name so all old posts reflect it, too. They did it for me.

I accept the argument against requiring real names. At the same time, I can't recall any venomous poster who did not hide behind a "handle".

Some came in with a handle but sign off with their name, or give a link to more info.
I respect them.

Interesting discussion.... I have some important questions to ask:

Why is respect so important to you?
Are you getting enough respect in other areas of your life?
Do you respect yourself?
Are your expectations realistic about TB?

So much talk around it but no one has addressed the real issue.

My basic point about the social structure of this internet forum thing -- the social psychology of it -- is that it will almost always tend to the chaotic. The social controls that inhibit bad behaviour in real life just are not present here. They never will be.

We are always going to have yabo's mixed in with people of accomplishment. We're going to have loogans mixed in with sensible, even-minded folks. We are always going to have signal and we're always going to have noise. It's everybody's choice whether this suits them or not. You can't just say to the formless, chaotic social mass "hey, where's the order here? Just shape up, everybody!" It's like expecting something to be hot and cold at the same time; like expecting my Kia to surpass the speed of light. It is to expect the sociologically impossible.

To use the word "is" is to assume the power and the right to define something, and when that something is another human being, that assumption is unwarranted. The ultimate powerlessness is not to be able to define yourself. Following the Law Of Chicken Soup, I think trying it could be revealing.

Sure, it's a worthwhile thought exercise. Fine. Using the word "is" doesn't necessarily assume inappropriate "power" or "right." We do not define human beings or, at least, we shouldn't. Facts do exist. It's okay to use the word "is." One need not shrink from knowledge. This doesn't mean that one shouldn't keep an open mind or that one shouldn't continually scrutinize ones own beliefs and objective data. Quite the opposite.

I hope this thread goes back to being OT... or, at least, closer to whatever OT is.

interesting. that's a common technique used by Large Awareness Training Groups (LGAT's) to get people to disassociate from their personal beliefs. this can cause a lot of trouble.....a double edged sword, imo.
