The pickup route is done, and positioned at the 30.25 inch location where the MM sweet spot reportedly resides. The north corners trespassed slightly into the weight reduction holes, and while it's not a huge deal it's disappointing. The wire channel route is in the perfect spot, though. The pickup seems like it's a bit far in the northerly direction, but I guess we will see when I get things wired up.

Deity do I *love* the smell of Tru Oil. The plan is to deliver Galadriel to @rondodunbar on Monday so he can kick the tires, and so she is getting a coat of two of Tru Oil to protect her a bit. She is not even close to being ready for finishing, but I would rather sand back a coat or two of Tru Oil than send her out naked. It just wouldn't be proper. ;)

Tomorrow is chock full of family and friends, so I am trying to get everything that needs a day or two to settle done today. Wiring, stringing, setup, and testing will be on Sunday.

I think I goofed up and put it about an inch north. The major concern I have is that when @rondodunbar had the Sonum he reported that it started sounding muddy pretty quickly north of the MM sweet spot. Of course that was on a 34" scale, and it's possible that this will be fine. Worst case scenario I fix it because he doesn't prefer the sound, and best case scenario is that the 35" scale makes up for the goof and he likes it. Either way I will do what's needed to make it right for him.

When I had the Sonum, while it started sounding muddy as I moved the p'up closer to the nut, it wasn't bad sounding. I think the 35" scale may make a difference, we'll know next week. I am not going to sweat it until she and I have had a chance to play. :)

I just finished up the first coat of Tru Oil on the neck, and now everything is resting until tomorrow. I will have time to throw on 1 or 2 more light coats on both body and neck tomorrow, and then Sunday I will get her assembled, wired, and strung up.

She's strung up, and just needs to get wired for sound before delivery. She's REALLY rough:
  • The fingerboard needs some work. The wormholes need to be filled to eliminate some serious buzz, and she needs leveling
  • She needs to be sanded a LOT more, especially on the edges.
  • Truss rod access has not yet been routed
  • I am glad I did not recess the bridges - the A string had to be lifted at the bridge a lot. I may need to drop the neck pocket a smidgen.
All of that being said @rondodunbar will be able to get a general feel for the design and we can tweak things to his liking. The big things I am concerned about are neck and body profile, and well as a general take on what needs to be fine tuned.

With the pickup mounted she looks a like more like a bass. I have to tell you the string spacing and fingerboard radius are REALLY hard to get used to. I am used to a flat radius, and a very tight spacing, while she's at a 19mm (.75") string spacing and a VERY round fingerboard radius of 7 1/4". It's insane. ;)

Sorry to go off topic, but do you use that iMac still and also is that a power mac or a mac pro.

I do still use it. I have a recent PPC version of Reaper installed on it, and it's a fun box to play with. It's an eMac with the following specs:
  • 1.25 GHz PPC G4
  • 1 GB RAM
  • An 80 GB HDD, which I am going to swap out for an SSD at some point.
  • It dual boots Linux and MacOSX Leopard (10.5)

Mine dual boots Linux and what ever was on it when I got it, it's an iMac g3 that I just mess around on now, I got it from my mom who got it from her work when they upgraded

All I can say is that the basses I've played with the 7.25" radius have been easier for me to play and that the basses I've played with 19mm string spacing have been easier as well, only by trying both on the same bass will I know if the two will work together. My gut tells me it will be awesome.

Ultimately it's about what *you* want. It's your bass, after all. ;) Most people would not be happy with the 14.5 string spacing I use in combination with a flat fingerboard.
