No, not really. It was sarcasm. I was poking fun at the fact that nearly every guitar maker makes red guitars, and how this revelation is hardly a remarkable departure from Ric's normal offerings.

It was also a comment on how resistant to change Rickenbacker as a company is. Now queue up the, "why mess with perfection?" arguments.

Their slim is most other brands fat.

Oh! Do you mean to say Ruby Red has been available all this time? Or it has been added to the standard line up and will be available from now on?

And I was aware of Midnight Blue, but not the metallic version, so is it also a standard color to be offered yearly?

So I guess I'm confused by what people mean by "standard" Ric colors. In the 4003, the colors I would call standard, i.e. those offered for long periods, not limited runs, are Jetglo, Mapleglo, Fireglo. Some colors have been around for awhile, like MID. Others seems to come and go, like white. The most rare are the COY finishes like Turquoise.

I have never seen Ruby Red or MID in a metallic finish, so I'm wondering how long they're gonna be around, for a short period of time, or if they are truly a permanent "standard" finish.

Standard means a regular production color, not a Color Of The Year (COY) or a special one-off or short run.

Midnight Blue (MID) has been a standard color for years now but the recent version of it is amazing looking, as you have noted in that photo of the "metallic blue" 381/12V69.

Ruby (RBY) was a standard color a few years ago, and has been re-introduced at this year's NAMM Show as a regular production standard color. Even er!!!

the 80's Ruby was different. It was brighter...I have had 4 of them in Ruby and wished I still had the ones with BT...I am not impressed with this...great idea...not so great execution...

Most of the photos did not have great lighting on the instruments. I will wait until seeing one in person, but from adjusting a few photos I can see these will be great looking in their own right, even if the process for doing the finish is different than the old RBY.

IMO, the best color ever for a 4001/4003 series bass is Autumnglo.

I really doubt you can judge until you see it in person.
