True but considering I don't like anything I have tried made after 96 thus far, these will prob measure in that area...unimpressed..

In the 80s the Ruby and the Midnight blue were first painted silver and then painted blue or red.
The current ruby and mid blue have the metallic color mixed in.
You mean, to achieve the slightly metallic effect, they used to do it in two seperate coats?

Yes ... I had a 1990 4003s5 midnight blue and any little chip in the paint would reveal a silver coat of paint underneath.
The current way of doing the Ruby and mid Blue is better. But it may not look as good to some.

That's a pretty large sample! Especially considering how much Rics have changed within that time. Why '96?

Exactly Fender used either gold or silver as base for CAR. Dont know if it was year, supply, whim or whatever that determined which one was used.
My 85 Ruby 4003 is rather beat up, and you can see the silver in some of the dings that are not down to the wood.

Any dealer could take a deposit for you right now, they just have to have placed an order for the instrument you want, and if not, they are likely to do so very soon. You're out east, so maybe try Pick of the Ricks. Where I'm located, Wildwood is one of the best dealers. Etc.
Sounds good, I was not sure how the Ric ordering system works. Pick of the Ricks allows you to place a deposit on instruments they've already ordered, but I guess I'll email Chris and see when they will order these.

Now that the 4004Ciis have the 4003 two-piece neck I wouldn't hesitate to try it. Previously I think their profile was hit-or-miss (I played a bunch and just didn't get along with some as well as others).
If I got a 4004, I'd have to add a teardrop pickguard--they just look naked to me! Those HB-1s with the simple low-loss circuit sound great though.

The new slimmer 4004 neck, along with the Ruby & gold hardware combination should equal one great playing, killer looking 4004Cii.
I have the same tough decision that cewillm has = 4003, or 4004Cii?
My all time favorite Ric color is Burgundy, but I don't think Ric will do that color again for quite some time, so the Ruby is tempting.... Very tempting..

That settles that. I picked up a Fireglo 4004 Cii from Chris @ Pick of the Ricks tonight and also put a $200 deposit on a Ruby 4004 Cii. He still has some spots for ruby 4003s, and he said his batch __MIGHT__ arrive as early as May (of this year!!!)
I'm a little disappointed that the ruby 4004 Ciis are not semi-transparent so as to show off some nice flamed maple underneath, but I'd imagine it's neigh impossible to do a metallic semi-transparent finish, and it wouldn't match up with its brethren too well.
BTW - there are ruby 4004 Laredos being produced as well. Since we can't see underneath, I assume the Ciis will still have a walnut core with a maple sammich, but the gold hardware will be the only tip-off. I personally think gold looks better than silver in this case.

Lordy, that does look good. I'm on the fence for the new one, but if they had black trim, I'd buy two!
I guess I forgot to post a pic of my Ruby 4004 Laredo in this thread, got it almost two months ago. 
Well apparently some Ls that are opaque get sammiches and some Ciis that are opaque don't, I once read. The logic is that the sammich doesn't affect the sound, it's largely aesthetic. So a finish that obscures it means either one is probably fine. For what it's worth I can vouch for the idea that the tone isn't that different between the two models, having played bucketloads of 4004s at this point. The pickups are a much bigger factor in how a 4004 sounds, and the neck pickup placement.
I think this swapping around with opaque 4004s is largely the exception, not the rule, but just thought I'd mention it.
