I think it was the nicest of the solid red finishes RIC has done, maybe DCM (the very limited edition Dark Cherry Metallic), but I never saw either in person.

The 4003 body looks to be cut to the 4004 spec in the last few years. Definitely much slimmer.
Personally I like it, but some prefer the older body style.

This new Ruby looks like it's a deep metallic like the Midnight Blue (MID) finish.

Actually, I owned a burgundy model ( year 2002 ) and stupidly sold it a few years ago. She was gorgeous !!! I now have a 75th anniversary Dark Cherry Metallic, and to be honest, there is nothing comparable out there on a Ric bass so much the finish is beautiful !!!:hyper:

So a finish that obscures it means either one is probably fine. For what it's worth I can vouch for the idea that the tone isn't that different between the two models, having played bucketloads of 4004s at this point. The pickups are a much bigger factor in how a 4004 sounds, and the neck pickup placement.

My experience is the opposite. I found the Cii to be darker sounding than the Laredos I have played. Maybe it was the gold vs. chrome hardware that caused the difference?

I wasn't saying Laredos sound darker than Ciis, just that there's not a big difference to my ears. If any. If you hear it, great! :) Ben Hall doesn't seem to think there's a difference in the sound (that's what he said, anyway) which made me feel a little better about the conclusion I had already come to.

It may just be the variations you typically find from one bass to the next,but my laredo sounds (and feels) a lot more like a 4001/4003 than my cii,in that the strings seem to resonate through the bass more freely
. I wouldn't say the cii sounds necessarily "darker",but the attack/decay qualities are somewhat different. I love both of them,but it just seems to me that my 3 piece guitar is naturally going to vibrate a bit differently to my 7 piece one....of course the new ones would be 4-and 8 piece respectively,now,since they have 2 piece necks.

+1. Not an updated and improved 4003/5 or anything but now it's in a color that every other manufacturer has released basses and guitars in for 15 years already.

Rics are largely a visual sell. Every bassist can immediately identify a Ric from the iconic shape and the horns and the headstock and the bridge and the pickups. Every part of the bass is exaggerated or chromed and oversized to have a flashy look. They also have been used by very visible celebrities, Paul McCartney being a prime example.

So they say "let's up the ante and make a .... Red one."
