RIGS OF DOOM - Ch. 3

The Electric cabinets only took about a month and a half, but the heads I've been waiting on since Aug. 2008. Any day now. Any day......

Yeah, jesus. The wait time on their Amps is awful. Not too bad for your cabs though. I was looking at their 810 for a while but the specs really weren't all that great for the price so I'm looking at an Emperor 4x12 to augment my Sunn 2x15 instead. Very nice looking setup you have.

A beastly rig. How does the Emperor compare to the Electrics?

Edit: Whoops, realized that's a guitar cab, huh?
This particular Emperor is a guitar cab. I've used it for bass as well, but it's kind of loose in the low end. It sounds righteous with the Taurus pedal though. Technically the Electric cabs are guitar cabs too, but they have much tighter low end. I like the way they handle the high's and mids. I usually play a 6 string bass, and the smooth texture with a bit of break-up when driven really makes me smile.

OK Red gave me some abuse for not including pics with my post about the rig. I spent all day today installing the speaker cabling for the last two amplifiers. I also brought out Wet and Dry DI connections to the #1 AMP / PREAMP and the foot switch connections.

The Amps start with #1 at the top and its preamp drives all of the amplifiers through the JD-7 which can be seen in the rear. This allows me to turn off or on any combination of amps without changing anything else.

The basement is blocked off with plastic for the next few days to keep dust from working upstairs so I haven't been able to "TEST" the latest wiring, but I'll be able to do that on Tuesday. I'm confident it will work.

The rear amplifier connections are duplicated on the rear panel of the rack. A Channel A and Channel B from each amp and a mono-block connection. I do have to remove a rear panel and push the switch on each amp if I change to stereo, but I run these amps MONO.

The KORG tuner is also on the rear panel. I just have to walk around back. This keeps the thing from flashing all over while playing. That isn't very attractive to watch. I will need to have a custom width panel cut as the JD-7 is in a half space to allow the thin slit above it to allow the cables out. The space below it will be filled once I get a custom panel cut.

Enjoy the pics. Barely seen in the photos are the lined up four 810 cabinets and two 215 cabs that each of these amps drives.

Dude, thats rediculious! I noticed your from Sioux Falls. Do you play in a band up there? I'm in Critical Threat, we gig in sufu all the time.

I'm pretty much a newb when it comes to these massive rigs/cabs and stuff but I have a question: doesn't using guitar cabs for bass damage the speakers?

No harm really, as long as the amp/speaker wattage aren't mismatched. Unless you run a crazy amount of low end at high volumes the speakers should be fine. The "guitar" speakers have different freq. response curves that you may love or hate. Even though I use a 6-string bass, I don't like a ton of muddy low end on stage, and I've never liked tweeters especially with fuzz or overdrive. I'm closer to the sound I've always wanted right now with this set up than ever before. It works great for me,m but your mileage may vary.Link Removed

Thanks to all for the comments on the cabs. They look even better in person. I can't wait to get the matching heads. c.

Haha, that's not the type of music I expected you to be playing with that rig at all. Something seemed strange when you mentioned a 6 string though. Not knocking your music at all, it's pretty good, just not what I expected...DOOM.

What Electric heads are you getting?

I Know. Trust me, people look at me like I'm insane all the time. I'm into a lot of musical styles. Someday I hope to put together a sweet doomy old school project. I have a Volume unit with kt88's, and a Power unit with kt88's on order.

Oooooohhh, how I envy you. That is a rig of DOOM right there! You'd better post some demos of that rig once you get it :D

I would LOVE to hear how those two cabs sound with my Demeter/Crown MA2402 rig. Monstrous, I'm sure.

UNbelievable. I can't say enough about these 15/6 cabs. I took a shot in the dark building these because I was tired of not "hearing" myself. Wow did it ever pay off.

A couple of 90ish pound fridges and a 15 or so pound cased head.

I have a VT bass pedal biamped into these things through a smallish amp 800W= about 1/4 of the 15's capacity. If I close my eyes there are an infinite number of SVT's behind me.

Can't wait to add some power.
